Davis Nets 34 As Titans Comeback Falls Short

Box Score DETROIT (2/13/2020) -- Sophomore Antoine Davis scored a game-high 34 points and the Titans made a thrilling comeback in the final minutes, but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a 76-72 contest to visiting Youngstown State on Thursday.

Davis - who netted 25 in the second half alone - was 14-of-29 from the field and 6-of-9 from behind the arc with five assists and two steals. Sophomore Marquis Moore tallied his third career double-double with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and senior Justin Miller and junior Dwayne Rose Jr. had nine points apiece.

Wearing throwback uniforms from the 1977-78 NCAA campaign, the Titans (6-20, 4-9 HL) were down by 12, 72-60, with 2:39 left when they scored 10-straight points to make it a one-possession game. Youngstown State (15-11, 8-5 HL) hit two free throws to end that run and two from the charity line from Moore made it 74-72 with under 14 seconds left, but the Penguins hit free throws to close out the game.

The Titans trailed 14-3 five minutes into the game and 21-10 at the 11:35 mark. They started to fight back and were within six, 21-15, but YSU was able to extend the lead back to double digits, 30-15, with 8:14 left and took a 38-27 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Detroit Mercy kept clawing away and were within five, 63-58, at the 6:33 mark, but the Penguins once again held on and raised the lead back to 12, 72-60, with 2:39 on the clock. That is when the Titans started their comeback as Moore had a four-point plat as he sank a 3-pointer and was fouled. After that, Davis posted two-straight treys as the defense forced misses to make it a 72-70 game with under 45 ticks remaining.

Miller also pulled down seven rebounds and Rose Jr. added two assists, while sophomore Chris Brandon had six boards.

The Titans shot 40.3 percent from the field with nine triples and were 9-of-10 at the free-throw line. They also outrebounded the Penguins, 39-31.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Saturday as the Titans host Cleveland State at 1 p.m. on Dick Vitale Court.

Tickets start at just $10 and can be purchased at DetroitTitans.com/tix.

  • Youngstown State then raised the lead to double-digits again, 72-60, at the 2:39 mark
  • Moore started a 10-0 run by hitting a three and getting fouled, making the free throw for the four-point play with 1:51 on the clock
  • After a defensive stand, Davis nailed a three and it was 72-67 with 1:24 remaining
  • The Titans then forced another YSU miss and converted on the other end as Davis sank another from long range for a 72-70 contest with 41 ticks left
