GREEN BAY, Wis. (2/14/2020) -- Freshman guard Sylare Starks scored a team-high 14 points Friday, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dropped a 72-45 contest with host Green Bay from the Kress Events Center on Valentine's Day. It was Starks' 15th game scoring in double figures in her freshman campaign.

Sophomore forward Maxine Moore added eight points and four rebounds and sophomore guard Jiera Shears added seven points for the Titans (3-10 Horizon League). Starks scored nine of her 14 points in the first half and sank two 3-pointers in the contest. Detroit Mercy shot 37.8 percent from the floor (16-of-45).

Starks scored four points in the first quarter as Detroit Mercy trailed 16-8 after the first 10 minutes. The Titans doubled their point total in the second stanza, scoring 16 points. Moore opened the second quarter with a turn-around on the block, but Green Bay responded with seven-straight points. Freshman guard Annika Corcoran sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the 6:41 mark of the second and Starks added another 3-pointer off a steal and dish from classmate Markyia McCormick at the 5-minute mark to cut into the Phoenix lead.

The Titans made it a 10-4 run in the second quarter after Corcoran sank another jumper to cut the Green Bay lead to nine points, 27-18. Starks sank a runner off-glass in the final 90 seconds and Moore added a jumper in the final 30 seconds as Detroit Mercy trailed by 12 at the halftime break, 36-24.

Green Bay opened the third quarter on a run, before Starks sank her second 3-pointer and 38th of the season midway through the third quarter. McCormick made a tough lay-up under the arm of a Green Bay defender and added the ensuing free throw for a 3-point play later in the stanza. The Phoenix led after three, 53-33.

Sophomore forward Nicole Johanson had a turn-around jumper early in the fourth quarter and Shears scored five points in the first six minutes of the final stanza as the Titans shot 50-percent (4-of-8) in the final quarter. Green Bay pulled away in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory on its home court.

The Titans were out-rebounded in the contest, 44-20, but limited Green Bay to 5-of-24 shooting from the outside (20.8 percent) and forced the Phoenix into 13 turnovers. Moore connected on 4-of-9 field goal attempts in the game. Starks hit 2-of-5 shots from beyond the arc, sinking two of the four Titan 3-pointers.
