Titans Visit Youngstown State for Friday Battle With Penguins

DETROIT (2/20/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team returns to the road to play in its final two regular season contests away from Calihan Hall this weekend, beginning with Friday night's game at Youngstown State in Ohio.

The opening tip is set for 7 p.m. ET and is set to be streamed live on ESPN-Plus from the Beeghly Center. The Titans then head to Cleveland State for a 2 p.m. ET game on Sunday.

On The Court:
  • The Titans are 3-11 in the Horizon League and are in ninth place in the conference, two games behind Youngstown State (5-9 HL).
  • Sophomore forward Maxine Moore recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the Titans' last game at Milwaukee.
  • Freshman guard Sylare Starks leads all Horizon League freshmen in scoring at 10.2 points per game and has scored in double figures a team-best 15 times.
  • Starks also ranks in the top-10 in the HL in 3-pointers made per game (1.6, eighth) and minutes played per game (30.7, sixth).
  • Moore is averaging 10.7 points per game in her past seven games, scoring eight or more points in six of those seven games.
  • Senior Zoey Oatis ranks fourth in the Horizon League in steals per game (1.6) and is one of three players to rank in the top-15 in both steals and blocks in the league.
  • Freshman guard Annika Corcoran is shooting 40-percent (16-for-40) from behind the 3-point arc in Horizon League contests.
  • As a team, Detroit Mercy is shooting 72.4 percent from the free throw line in the past seven games (79-for-109).
  • Three Titan freshmen have earned Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors this season -- Sylare Starks (Nov. 25), Bridgid Fox (Dec. 16) and Markyia McCormick (Dec. 23).
  • The Titans are 23-23 all-time against Youngstown State in 46 career meetings; Detroit Mercy is 8-15 in road games from the Beeghly Center.
  • Starks is tied-for-seventh in Titan freshmen history in 3-pointers made (40) in a single season with former Titan standout Nicole Urbanick.
  • Titan freshmen have scored 52-percent of the team's points this season and scored in double figures 32 times as a class.
  • Head coach Bernard Scott is in his fifth season at the helm of the Titans and has led them to two top-four finishes and a Horizon League championship game in 2017.
Scouting Youngstown State:
  • The Penguins are 12-13 overall this year, which includes a 5-9 record in the Horizon League. YSU is 8-5 in home contests played from the BeeghlyCenter. 
  • Youngstown State snapped a six-game losing streak last Saturday, winning an 84-72 victory over Cleveland State at home.
  • YSU also has wins over the Titans, UIC, Oakland and league-leader IUPUI.
  • Junior Chelsea Olson leads the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game.
  • The Penguins lead the league in 3-pointers made per game (7.6), while freshman Maddie Schires pacing the squad with 57 treys in 2019-20.
  • Olson ranks fifth in the HL in rebounding (7.5) and eighth in assists per game (3.0) for the Penguins.
  • Junior McKenah Peters also averages in double figures at 10.8 points per game and is second in rebounding (5.5 rpg).
Last Time Out
Sophomore forward Maxine Moore tallied her first career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and the Titans knocked down eight 3-pointers, but Milwaukee earned a 76-51 win on its home court on Sunday, Feb. 16 from the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee.

Moore had a career-high 11 rebounds in the contest, while senior Zoey Oatis had a career-best four assists for the Titans, which made 8-of-22 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc (36.4 percent). Oatis added two blocks for the Titans. Detroit Mercy shot 33.3-percent overall in the contest, while Milwaukee made 45.6-percent of field goal attempts. The Panthers out-rebounded the Titans, 40-30, and made 12 treys in the game. Freshman Sylare Starks added eight points for the Titans.
