Women's Basketball Closes Road Swing at Cleveland State on Sunday

DETROIT (2/22/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team closes our a four-game road swing Sunday afternoon, playing at Cleveland State in a 2 p.m. ET contest from the Wolstein Center. The game may be seen live via ESPN-Plus.

It's the fourth-straight road game for the Titans. Detroit Mercy closes the regular season at home next week, hosting Northern Kentucky on Thursday, Feb. 27 and Wright State on Saturday, Feb. 29 for Senior Night from Calihan Hall.

On The Court:
  • The Titans are 3-12 in Horizon League play with three games remaining, while Cleveland State is in fifth place with an 8-7 league mark.
  • As a team, Detroit Mercy knocked down 11 3-pointers at YSU on Friday, tying a season-high. The Titans shot 44-percent from 3-point range in the game.
  • Freshman guard Sylare Starks tied her career-high with 19 points on Friday at YSU, sinking a career-best five 3-pointers. She leads all league freshmen in scoring at 10.5 points per game and has scored in double figures 16 times during her freshman campaign.
  • Starks also ranks in the top-10 in the HL in 3-pointers made per game (1.7, sixth) and minutes played per game (30.9, fifth).
  • Three Titan freshmen have earned Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors this season -- Sylare Starks (Nov. 25), Bridgid Fox (Dec. 16) and Markyia McCormick (Dec. 23).
  • Sophomore forward Maxine Moore is averaging 10.1 points per game in her past eight games, scoring eight or more points in six of those eight games.
  • Senior Zoey Oatis ranks fourth in the Horizon League in steals per game (1.6) and is one of three players to rank in the top-15 in both steals and blocks in the league.
  • Freshman guard Jiera Shears set new career-highs with six rebounds and five assists on Friday.
  • The Titans are 41-22 all-time against Cleveland State, which includes a 5-5 mark under head coach Bernard Scott.
  • Starks is tied-for-fifth in Titan freshmen history in 3-pointers made (45) in a single season and is just outside the top-10 in points for a freshman.
  • Titan freshmen have scored 53-percent of the team's points this season and scored in double figures 33 times as a class.
  • Head coach Bernard Scott is in his fifth season at the helm of the Titans and has led them to two top-four finishes and a Horizon League championship game in 2017.
Last Time Out
Freshman guard Sylare Starks knocked down five 3-pointers and tied her career-high with 19 points and the Titans played back-and-forth on the road at Youngstown State all night, falling in the final seconds, 72-66, to the Penguins from the Beeghly Center.

The Titans shot 11-of-25 from the outside (44-percent) overall in the game, tying a season-high. The Titans led at the half (41-38) and after three quarters (51-50), but ultimately fell in the final seconds after the game was tied, 66-66. Senior Zoey Oatis added 11 points, freshman forward Bridgid Fox had eight points and sophomore guard Jiera Shears added career-highs with six rebounds and five assists for the Titans. Starks made 5-of-7 triples and shot 7-of-10 from the field overall.

Scouting Cleveland State:
  • The Vikings are 18-8 overall and 8-7 in Horizon League play, sitting in fifth place in the league standings with two games left to play.
  • CSU is coming off an 84-72 loss to Youngstown State last weekend, before picking up a victory over Oakland on Friday.
  • Mariah Miller ranks second among all Horizon League players in scoring at 17.6 points per game, while Mariah White is fifth in scoring at 14.8 ppg.
  • Savanna Crockett is third in the league in rebounding at 8.4 boards per game and fourth at 1.2 blocks per game.
  • White leads all Horizon League players in steals by a healthy margin, totaling 78 on the season and 3.0 thefts per contest.
  • The Vikings are second in the conference in scoring offensive (69.7 points) and first in steals at 9.9 per game.
