TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (2/9/2020) -- Sophomore
Taryn Peru recorded the first Titan RBI of the season against North Carolina as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped both games to ACC schools in the final day at the JoAnne Graf Classic on Sunday.
Detroit Mercy (0-4) had a spirited rally in the first game of the day scoring three times in the fifth in an 11-3 setback to #RV North Carolina (3-2), while the red, white and blue dropped a 12-0 decision to host and eighth-ranked Florida State (5-0).
Sophomore
McKenna Tanguay and freshman
Renee Trotman each had two hits on the day, while Peru and freshman
Jordan Hazel also recorded a base knock.
#RV North Carolina 11, Detroit Mercy 3
In the first game, junior
Regan Glenn got the start and had a strikeout in five innings of work. UNC was limited to just three runs through the first three innings before breaking the game open with five in the top half of the fifth.
In the fifth, the Titans didn't go down easy as they loaded the bases with no outs on walks from sophomore
Maggie Hampton and
Allison Smith and an infield single by Hazel.
A wild pitch then scored a run and the Titans reloaded the bases with still no one out as freshman
Kara Wolfbauer drew a walk before another wild pitch scored Detroit Mercy's second run. The third came across on Peru's fielder's choice for the first Titan RBI of the season.
#8 Florida State 12, Detroit Mercy 0
The Titans had their hands full again with the top-10 Seminoles, but senior
Liz Murphy struck out three batters in four innings of work.
It looked like the Titans would score first as Tanguay doubled to center to lead off the game and Trotman followed with a single to left to put runners on the corners with no outs. Detroit Mercy, though, was not able to get a runner across the plate.
FSU then scored eight in the second to take the lead.
Peru ripped a one-out double in the fourth, but did not advance any further.
Up Next
The Titans will hit the road again next weekend, Feb. 15-16, to the warm weather of Arizona as Detroit Mercy plays in Arizona State's tournament with games against the host Sun Devils, Boise State, Kentucky and Illinois State
Coach Gillis On The Weekend
"To think that North Carolina had two losses and Alabama had three just shows you the quality of teams that were in this tournament."
"We didnt quit, we never gave up and we kept fighting and that is what we wanted to see as a coaching staff."
"Offensively, we didn't strikeout a lot against some good pitchers so very encouraged from what we saw out of our hitters."
"Defensively, we didn't play as good as we are capable of. Some of that might have been jitters, some on not getting outside to practice, but there were some routine plays that we need to make because if you make a small mistake against teams like this, they will make you pay."
