Davis Named To Bob Cousy Award Watch List

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 18, 2021) -- University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball senior Antoine Davis is starting to see the preseason awards roll out and today, he was named one of the top-20 candidates for the Bob Cousy Award Watch List.

The annual honor now in its 19th year recognizes the top point guards in Division I men's college basketball.

The Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award - given by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame - was named after Class of 1971 Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

The three-time HL First Teamer is entering a senior year that can see him break a number of school, Horizon League and NCAA records. The second leading returning scorer in the country at 24.0 points per game started all 22 games last season and was an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, a Lou Henson Award All-American and finalist as well as First Team All-Horizon League and NABC First Team All-District 12.

He ended the season leading the Horizon League and ranking third in the country in scoring at 24.0 points per game, just 0.5 shy of the leader, marking the third-straight season he finished in the top four nationally in scoring (26.1 for third in 2019 and 24.3 for fourth in 2020), and he also became just the second player in HL history to lead the conference three times joining Loyola's Alfredrick Hughes (1983, 1984, 1985).

Davis was the HL leader and second in the nation in 3-point field goals per game (3.77), and that marked the third-straight year that he has been top 10 nationally in 3-point field goals per game. He also ranked sixth in the conference and 59th in the nation in assists per game (4.8) and 92nd in DI in total assists (105)

In three seasons, Davis has amassed 2,040 career points, third in school history and 279 points behind the top spot, and his 316, 3-pointers is second in school and Horizon League history just 32 away from the record. He has scored in double figures in all 82 games - reaching at least 17 points in 66 of them - as he chases the NCAA record of 115 set by Lionel Simmons and Chris Clemons.

"The Hall of Fame is honored to present the Bob Cousy Award to the best point guard in the collegiate game for the 19th consecutive year," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "This year's class of outstanding student-athletes truly embody the spirit and passion of the game, and we know the fans can't wait for the season to get started. Starting Five Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies will allow fans to support their favorite players throughout the season and will ultimately play a role in determining the winners of these prestigious awards. We greatly appreciate the support of Dell Technologies, the fans, our selection committee and the namesake of the award, Mr. Bob Cousy."

College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2022 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed to 10 and then in late February to just 5. In March the five finalists will be presented to Mr. Cousy and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where a winner will be selected.

The winner of the 2022 Bob Cousy Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Jerry West Shooting Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award, in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
