Women's Soccer Set to Host Rival Oakland on Wednesday

DETROIT (3/2/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer program plays its second consecutive match at home on Wednesday and first outdoors in the 2021 spring season with the Titans hosting Metro Series rival Oakland from Titan Field. The game is set for a 1 p.m. ET start.

The match may be seen live on ESPN-Plus for a monthly subscription fee. Live statistics for the match will also be provided for the contest.

The Titans are 1-1-1 on the season, coming off a double-overtime draw with IUPUI indoors last Wednesday. Oakland is 1-2-1 in 2021, also coming off a tie, 1-1 at Northern Kentucky last Wednesday.

The Titans
Freshman goalkeeper Marisa Silver notched her first career shutout in the Titans' last match, a 0-0 draw with IUPUI last Wednesday. Silver has played all 290 minutes in net this season and has made 13 saves, while recording an 81.3% save percentage and 0.93 goals against average after three matches.

Freshman forward Erica Toupin had six shots against the Jaguars and has team-highs with 15 shots and nine shots on goal. She is one of three Titans with goals with senior defender Olivia Parra and junior midfielder Julie Ann Piechocki also recording goals so far. Piechocki has added 10 shots for the Titans. Freshman defender Paige Myers has an assist and six shots for Detroit Mercy.

The Titans have out-shot their opponents in all three games this season and hold a 55-38 advantage in shots entering Wednesday's match with Oakland. The red, white and blue are averaging 18.3 shots per game and also hold a 16-14 edge in corner kicks thus far.

Scouting Oakland
The Golden Grizzlies are 1-2-1, earning a season-opening 2-1 victory at Youngstown State on Feb. 3. OU dropped home games with UIC (1-0) and Cleveland State (2-1) the next two weeks, before earning a 1-1 draw with Northern Kentucky on the road last week. Juan Pablo Favero enters his fourth season at the helm of the Golden Grizzlies.

Junior midfielder Sami Lopez leads the team through four games with five points on one goal and a team-best three assists. Freshman forward Jackie Reilly has added three points and three other Oakland players have added one goal each in 2021. Junior midfielder Alexa Sabbagh has a team-best nine shots and six shots on goal for OU. Senior goalkeeper Jaimie Leas and junior GK Noemi Stadelmann have split time in net through four games and combined to make eight saves. Leas has a 71.4% save percentage and 0.88 goals against average.

All-Time Series
It's the 25th meeting all-time between the two opponents with Oakland holding the series advantage, 15-7-2. The series is even in the past seven meetings (3-3-1) with all of those contests decided by one goal or less. Oakland has won each of the previous three meetings, including the last match between the two in Detroit, a 1-0 OU victory on Sept. 26, 2018. Prior to that, the Titans were unbeaten in the four previous matchups (3-0-1), with all of those going to overtime.

The Titans last win against the Golden Grizzlies came in 2016, when the Titans won an overtime battle, 1-0, at home on Oct. 19, 2016.

Last Time Out
The Titans out-shot visiting IUPUI, 23-16, in the match and put six shots on goal, but neither team was able to score a goal as the Titans and Jaguars battled to a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes from UWM Sports Complex in Pontiac last Wednesday. It was the third-straight match the Titans have out-shot their opponent to open the 2021 spring campaign.

Freshman goalkeeper Marisa Silver notched her first career shutout in goal, turning aside three looks on goal. The Titans were the aggressors early in the contest and had 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes alone. Junior midfielder Julie Ann Piechocki and freshman forward Erica Toupin each had six shots in the match, with Toupin also firing three shots on goal. Piechocki hit the crossbar with a shot in the first half and had a free-kick opportunity from just outside the box with 9 seconds left in overtime, but her attempt went just high of the crossbar in the first extra frame.

Senior Seven
The Titans have a seven-member senior class in 2021 which includes Kelli Doyle, Olivia Elby, Ana Ginez, Sophie Mapes, Olivia Parra, Rachel Russo and Neteya Tavernier. Six of the seven members of the senior class are four-year Titans entering the 2020-21 academic school year with Ginez transferring in after her freshman season playing for Oakland.

#HLWSOC Preseason Poll
The Horizon League released the 2021 spring preseason poll with all 12 league head coaches voting on the teams. The Titans were picked to finish 12th by the league's coaches, receiving 30 points total. The defending Horizon League champions Milwaukee earned 10 first-place votes and led the poll with 132 points. IUPUI (118 points) was second in the poll, with UIC getting one first-place vote to finish third at 112 points. Rounding out the top-five were Northern Kentucky (108) and Oakland (105), with the Golden Grizzlies picking up the other first-place tally.
