DETROIT (7/8/2021) -- University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse graduate senior
Alex Akins added to Titan legacy on Thursday as he was named First Team CoSIDA At-Large Academic All-District® 5.
He was the only men's lacrosse player honored on District 5 and is just the second Titan to earn the academic distinction following former teammate Matthew Vangalen in 2019.
Akins - the 2021 Detroit Mercy President's Award winner - wrapped up a brilliant Titan career this season, one that saw him etch his name in the record books. A four-time All-MAAC defenseman, he ended his career sixth in school history with 52 caused turnovers and collected 79 ground balls, while playing in 59 career games - tied for seventh in school history - with 54 starts - fifth in the record book.
This season also saw him finish as a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and was named a Senior CLASS Second Team All-American. He also was tabbed a USILA Scholar All-American in 2020 and was a three-time member of the MAAC All-Academic Team.
He graduated with a 3.90 GPA and has a 4,0 in graduate school as he is obtaining his MBA.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District® teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom. The at-large sports are comprised of women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's crew/rowing, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot.
