Alek Mauro carded a career-low 69 to end in the top 20 where he was joined by senior
Anthony Occhiuto as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team finished in 11th at Southern Illinois Edwardsville's Dolenc Invitational.
Detroit Mercy posted its second 298 of the tournament in the final round and concluded the event with an 895 (298-299-298) at the par 71, 7,016-yard Gateway Golf Links in Madison, Illinois.Â
Occhiuto tallied a 1-over 72 in the final round to finish in a tie for 11th with a 216 (75-69-72). His final 18 saw him knock in three birdies and 12 pars as he led the team and was tied for sixth in the event with 11 total birdies. He was also tied for sixth in the field with a 1-over, 4.04 average on the par 4's.
Mauro started his final round with four birdies and six pars in his first 10 holes and added another two birdies and four pars for his career-best 2-under 69 to share 17th with a 220 (74-77-69).Â
He topped the team with 34 pars and had eight birdies, third on the squad, and was also tied for the event lead with a 2-under, 2.87 average on the course's par 3'sÂ
Sophomore
Ryan Sangchompuphen shared 56th with a career-low 230 (76-76-78). Senior
James Hill tied for 72nd with a 235 (73-81-81), while senior
Drew Tucci posted a 236 (80-77-79) for 74th overall.Â
Detroit Mercy will be right back in action next week, Oct. 4-5, when the red, white and blue travel to Westlake, Ohio, for Cleveland State's Tom Tontimonia Invite.
