Men's Lacrosse Name Five Captains For 2023

DETROIT (10/20/2022) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team will have a quintet of student-athletes to lead the way as the Titans announced their captains for the upcoming season.

Joining returning senior captains Ryan Birney and Kyle Loken are seniors David Beacom, Tyler Hart and Luke Majick.

"These five individuals have stood out for their leadership on and off the field," said head men's lacrosse coach Chris Kolon '09 (MBA). "They are five of the hardest-working student-athletes on the team. These guys know that it's not about scoring goals or playing time, it's about helping develop our team culture and making sure we are one family."

Birney has played in 23 games with 18 starts and has posted 33 points on 27 goals and six assists, reaching at least eight goals in his first three years as he dons the "C" for the second-straight season.

Another returning captain, Loken has played in 23 games as a midfielder and has totaled eight points on seven goals and an assist, along with 43 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.

The fifth-year senior Beacom has appeared in 28 games as a defensive midfielder and has collected five caused turnovers and 18 ground balls.

Hart is in his fourth year with the program and has seen action in three games, including picking up the win as he came off the bench to spark the Titans in the biggest comeback in school history with a 16-11 victory over VMI. He came in when the red, white and blue were down 9-1 with four minutes left in the first and led the comeback with seven saves in the final 49 minutes.

Majick is in his third year with the program after transferring from Furman. He has registered 33 points on 19 goals and 14 assists, while picking up 18 ground balls. He finished second on the team with 21 points and 13 goals and tied for first with eight assists last season and also tied his career-best with four points on three goals and an assist against Cleveland State, earning ASUN Player Of The Week, as his final two goals inside 50 seconds tied the game and then gave the Titans a 13-12 win.

The men's team is currently in the midst of fall practice and will announce its spring schedule in the near future.
