Owls Top Titans At Paradise Invitational

BOCA RATON, Fla. (11/19/2022) -- Graduate senior Arashma Parks nearly posted a double-double and graduate senior Antoine Davis scored a game-high 22 points, but Florida Atlantic took control early and never let up in a 76-55 setback on Saturday evening.

The game was part of the Paradise Invitational, hosted by FAU.

With the 22 points, Davis tied the NCAA record for most consecutive games in double figures with 115, sharing the record with Chris Clemons (Campbell, 2015-2019) and Lionel Simmons (La Salle, 1987-90).

Davis was 7-of-19 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line, with his seven field goals giving him 945 in his career and passing former Pistons' great John Long for the most in school history.

Parks grabbed a game and career-high 11 boards and scored a season-best eight points and senior Jordan Phillips had 16 points and four rebounds.

The Titans (2-2) got off to a sluggish start right, going 1-of-9 with four turnovers in the first seven minutes, but a jumper from graduate senior TJ Moss had the team down just 8-5 at the 13:45 mark. Davis would later connect on a shot and the team trailed 13-7 with 11:19 left in the first half, but FAU (4-1) went on an 11-0 run over the next five minutes to push the deficit to 24-7.

Davis would make two more baskets down the stretch and then got fouled on a three-point shot, hitting all three free throws to tie the NCAA record for most consecutive games in double figures. Phillips would end the half on a three to get the red, white and blue to 42-20.

In the second half, the defense held the Owls to just four points in the first seven minutes, but the Titans could not cut into the lead as Florida Atlantic would never let the margin get below 20.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Monday in the final game of the Paradise Invitational as the Titans host Bryant at Noon in a game that will be played at Florida Atlantic.

Game Notes:
  • This was the third career meeting between the two schools, with the Titans still leading the match-up, 2-1, with both victories at home
  • Florida Atlantic head coach Dusty was a student manager at Indiana when Mike Davis was an assistant coach from 1997-2000 and then served as an administrative assistant and video coordinator at IU from 2002-05 when Davis was the head coach and Titan assistants Donnie Marsh and Kerry Rupp were assistant coaches
  • Detroit Mercy's three 3-pointers were the fewest since going 3-of-19 at Wright State on Feb. 9, 2019
  • Davis now has 80 career 20-point games, 26 career 30-point outings and four 40-point contests in 115 games - reaching at least 17 points in 95 of them
  • Davis is the highest active scorer in the country in total points with 2,827, 18th in NCAA history, five away from 17th place and Otis Birdsong (Houston, 1973-77), 173 away from becoming the 11th player in NCAA history to score 3,000 points, 91 shy of Alfredrick Hughes (Loyola, 1981-85) Horizon League record and 840 away from Pete Maravich's NCAA-record 3,667
  • Davis did not hit a three, ending a streak of 48-straight with a triple, as the last time he did not connect on a trifecta was on Dec. 20, 2020, against Wright State
  • He has now made a three in 110 of his 115 collegiate games with 62 career contests with four or more triples, 22 with six or more, 10 games with seven or more, and has thrice connected on 10 in his career, tying a school record as well as breaking a conference tournament record
  • Parks just had his career-high in rebounds with nine at Boston College, while his career-high in points was 10 against St. Joseph's in 2019
  • Phillips has been in double figures in three of the Titans' four games
  • Freshman MarcusTankersley made his collegiate debut
