Davis Takes Down One NCAA Record In Setback To Bryant At Paradise Invitational

BOCA RATON, Fla. (11/21/2022) -- Graduate senior Antoine Davis scored a game-high 29 points to set a NCAA record for most consecutive games in double figures, but a late run by Bryant was the difference as the Titans fell in a shootout, 98-88, in the final game of the Paradise Invitational on Monday.

Davis was 10-of-18 from the field and 6-of-9 from three to go with five assists, three rebounds and a steal.

With his 29 points, Davis eclipsed Chris Clemons (Campbell, 2015-2019) and Lionel Simmons (La Salle, 1987-90) for the most consecutive games in double figures at 116. He also ran his point total to 2,856, passing Houston great Otis Birdsong (1973-77) and NBA Hall-Of-Famer in Indiana State's Larry Bird (1976-79) for 16th all-time in scoring, while his six triples in the game gave him 448, passing Clemons for sixth in the NCAA record book.

Junior Jayden Stone netted a career-high 24 points going 7-of-11 from the field and a career-best 5-of-6 from behind the arc, while also collecting a team and career-high five assists.

Senior Jordan Phillips had 11 points, three rebounds and two assists, and Oliver finished with 10 points and three boards. Graduate senior Arashma Parks grabbed a team-best five rebounds and graduate senior TJ Moss had four assists, four points, a block and a steal.

The Titans shot 52.6% overall (30-of-57) and 62.5% from three (15-of-24) with a season-high 21 assists as six players registered a helper in the contest.

The game featured seven ties and six lead changes as both squads shot over 50.0% from the field and from deep, posting a combined 31 triples in the matinee.

Detroit Mercy (2-3) found themselves down by 11, 82-71, with 8:25 left when the Titans went on a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to tie the game at 84-84. Stone scored a basket to get it started, and after a steal by graduate senior Damezi Anderson, hit two free throws and that was followed by a three from graduate senior A.J. Oliver to make it an 82-79 game. After a bucket by Bryant (5-1), Davis rang in a 3-pointer followed by Anderson who was able to corral an offensive rebound and lay it back in knotting the score at 84-84 with 4:59 left.

The Titans could not get that go-ahead basket as Bryant (5-1) would end the game on a 14-4 spurt.

It was a high-scoring affair right from the start as the game was tied at 9-9 just four minutes into the contest as Stone hit a three. The Titans would then take a 12-9 lead as Davis naIled his first triple at the 15:09 mark. Stone would then knock down back-to-back triples and was fouled on his last attempt with his free throw giving the Titans a 19-12 advantage with 13:24 left in the half.

Another triple by Stone had the Titans up seven again at 22-15, but Bryant would start to come back and eventually took a 31-29 lead midway through the period. Oliver hit from three for a 32-31 lead and Davis broke the NCAA record for double figures draining one in from outside to knot it at 38-all with 7:11 left to play.

The two teams kept trading baskets and two free throws by Stone with less than a second left had the red, white and blue down 56-55 at the break.

In the second half, the Bulldogs ran their lead to as many as 12 twice, the latest at 78-66, but a three from Davis got the Titans back to within single digits with 78-69 with 11:25 on the clock. Bryant would have the lead until the 13-2 charge by the red, white and blue.

The Titans will return home to host Charlotte on Wednesday, Nov. 23, in a Noon tip-off. Tickets start at just $10 and a number of ticket packages are available by clicking here
