MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (4/9/2022) -- Sophomore
Cat Kopchia recorded her fourth career hat trick, but the Titans couldn't hold down Central Michigan on offense as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team was defeated by CMU, 18-9, on Saturday.
Kopchia tallied three goals to lead the offense. Senior
Elise Harder had two goals and two draw controls, while senior
Taylor Cantelon had a goal and a game-high eight draw controls and a team-best three ground balls.
Junior
Annie Gilbert registered a goal and an assist and sophomore
Ella Brandt and freshman
Maddy Camm each found the back of the net.
Central Michigan (7-6, 5-1 MAC) got off to a 3-0 lead before freshman
Leah Bodnar found Gilbert who fired one in with 1:56 left in the first period. Down 4-1 to start the second, Cantelon won the draw control and then powered her way inside for a score to cut the deficit in half.
Camm would end a CMU three-goal spurt with a goal at the 10:06 mark in the second to make it 7-3, but the Chippewas answered with another three-goal run before Brandt ended that with her first collegiate goal off a pass from Gilbert.
Kopchia struck for her first just two minutes in to get the Titans within seven, 12-5. She also got the offense started in the fourth as her goal made it a 16-6 contest with 12:58 left. The Titans had three-straight goals late in the period as Harder scored on the extra-man attack at the 4:24 mark and then after Cantelon won a draw control, Harder netted a marker on the free position attempt. Kopchia ended the scoring with a goal with 25 seconds remaining.
Freshman
Kaileigh Nuessgen corralled a pair of ground balls. Junior
Hannah Shrader started and made three saves and graduate senior
Maddie Johnson and freshman
Meredith Leavell also saw action with Leavell finishing with three stops
Detroit Mercy was 10-of-11 on clears and nearly won draw controls, 15-16.
The Titans will return home as they host Youngstown State next Saturday, April 16, in a 1:00 p.m. contest at Seaholm High School.

- The all-time series is now tied at 4-4 with Central Michigan leading 3-1 at home
- Kopchia has now notched a point in 10 of the 12 games with a goal in nine
- Harder now has 141 draw controls, two away from fifth place and Zaynib Hamze, and she has also registered a point and a goal in 10 of the 12 games
- Cantelon has grabbed at least six draw controls in six games on the year and now has 136 career draw controls for seventh in school history
