Alek Mauro went for a big career best and two freshmen had season lows as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team finished play at Cleveland State's Tom Tontimonia Invitational on Tuesday.
The Titans placed 14th with an 877 (296-286-295) at the par 71, 6,811-yard Lakewood Country Club in Westlake, Ohio. The 877 score and 286 in the second round was the best since recording an 875 (296-285-294) and a 285 in the second round at the 2021 Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.
Mauro tied for 24th with a career-best 212 (69-72-71), the best score by a Titan since Scott Sparks shot a 211 at the 2021 Big Blue Intercollegiate. It was a career-best by five shots for Mauro, who had 10 pars and four birdies in the final round. He led the team with 37 pars and was second with nine birdies, while tied for sixth overall with a -1, 2.92 average on the par 3's.
Junior
Marko Banic just missed a career low by one stroke in tying for 67th with a 222 (72-75-75), while freshman
Mason Sokolowski shared 70th with a season-low 223 (78-69-76). Banic had 10 pars and three birdies in the final round and Sokolowski led the team with 10 birdies, including four in the final round.
Freshman
Gowtham Nalluri tied for 72nd with a season-low 224 (77-74-73) as he tied his season-best with a 2-over 73 in the final round, where he tallied 14 pars and a birdie.
The Titans will look to add one more fall event to the schedule.
