DETROIT (11/9/2023) -- University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse senior Cecelia Vergara will don a different red, white and blue for a few days as she will represent Puerto Rico at this year's PALA Sixes Cup.

The event starts on Thursday, Nov. 9 and will conclude on Nov. 11 in Kingston, Jamaica. 

Puerto Rico will face Mexico on Thursday at 8:30 a.m., and then play three games on Friday, one versus Mexico (1:30 p.m.) and two against Argentina (8:30 a.m., 4:00 p.m.) for four pool-play games before the medal competition starts on Saturday. 

A defensive midfielder, Vergara has appeared in 34 games and has 22 draw controls, 13 ground balls and seven caused turnovers to go with five points on four goals and an assist. 

She is also a three-time member of the Detroit Mercy Athletic Director's Honor Roll and a two-time member of the MAC Honor Roll and All-Academic Team.

The Pan-American Lacrosse Association (PALA) is the third Continental Federation (CF) formed under the auspices of World Lacrosse, which is the international governing body of lacrosse. As a Continental Federation, PALA governs members in the Americas and the Caribbean. 

Founded in the Fall of 2018, PALA is the umbrella organization that facilitates member nations and World Lacrosse in the following objectives:

• Promote the sport of lacrosse across our region, and among our sister CF;
• Develop lacrosse in our region;
• Develop a system of communication between PALA nations to share best practices for development and resources;
• Promote and encourage the exchange and development of sports camaraderie among PALA nations and our other Continental Federations;
• Facilitate and organize PALA sanctioned competitions for member nations
