DETROIT (3/17/2023) -- A bit of history was made on Saint Patrick's Day as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team hosted its first-ever night game on campus, but the luck of the Irish was not on the Titans' side as they fell, 15-9, to Lindenwood on Friday night.
Three Titans (1-4) tallied two goals on the day as redshirt junior
Charlotte Dale had two with an assist and junior
Sarah Meek and sophomore
Leah Bodnar each posted two markers. Bodnar also added a team-high three draw controls and sophomore Katie Biello added a team-best four ground balls.
Sophomore
Meredith Leavell started and made 10 saves in net, while freshman
Kayleigh Aitken played the last 25 minutes and recorded five stops.
Lindenwood (4-4) scored the first goal of the contest, but the Titans responded with a 5-0 run. Bodnar started it with a goal on the extra-women attack at the 11:44 mark. Leavell made three saves to keep the Lions off the board after that before junior
Cat Kopchia struck for a 2-1 lead at the 6:22 mark.
The Titans went right back on the attack winning the draw control as Dale scored to make it 3-1. Another draw control win, this time by freshman
Ysa Pakowski, led to senior
Annie Gilbert finding Meek for a marker and a 4-1 advantage at the 4:05 mark. Freshman
Alyssa Jarvis won the ensuing draw control and that helped get the offense started again, with Dale firing one past the goalie for a 5-1 margin with 2:49 to go.
Lindenwood would storm back, scoring six in a row to take the lead and that run was broken in the third as Bodner won the draw and then senior
Marina Butler found Jarvis for the goal early in the second half.Â
The Lions then went ahead, 10-6, when sophomore
Maddy Camm forced a turnover and that would end with Dale setting up Butler, who beat the goalie with 6:17 on the clock. The Titans would take advantage of a green card and with the extra-women attacker, Bodnar struck again and it was 10-8 with just over a minute left in the third.Â
The last Titan goal was by Meek, who won the draw and then fired one in with 10:03 left to make it 14-9, but Detroit Mercy could not rally anymore.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action next Saturday, March 25, when the red, white and blue visit Butler in a non-conference rematch.
