BOSTON (3/9/2023) -- University of Detroit Mercy graduate senior
Antoine Davis added another finalist watch to his name as the Lou Henson National Player of the Year award was announced on Thursday.
The award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball and honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.
Davis is already on the national ballot for the John R. Wooden Wooden Award and the Oscar Robertson Trophy.
He has already been named to the Lou Henson All-America Team three times in his career.
He leads the NCAA in a number of offensive categories, including scoring (28.2 ppg.), total points (930), total 3-pointers (159), 3-pointers per game (4.82) and total field goals (303). On the year, he has tallied a school-record 159, 3-pointers, second in NCAA history and three away from tying the single-season mark of 162 by Stephen Curry in 2007-08.
The only Titan to ever lead the nation in a NCAA statistic was Spencer Haywood, who averaged 22.1 rebounds in 1968-69, while his current rate of 28.2 points would be the second-highest in school history behind Haywood's 32.1 in 1968-69 and the highest in Horizon League history.
On the year, he has a league-best 28, 20-point games, 14, 30-point outings and four 40-point outbursts, with the four 40-point games the most since Campbell's Chris Clemons' four in 2018-19.
Davis also has 3,664 career points, second in NCAA history and three away from tying Pete Maravich's record 3,667. He already holds four NCAA records in career 3-pointers (588), 3-pointers by a freshman (132), consecutive games in double figures (144) and total games in double figures (144), while his 1,219 field goals are sixth all-time in NCAA history. During the year, he became just the second player in NCAA history to amass 3,000 points and 500 assists.
Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, ASUN, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, MEAC, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, SWAC, Summit, Sun Belt, WAC, West Coast.
The recipient of the 2023 award will be announced in March, in Houston site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
