HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (4/25/2022) -- Junior
Alek Mauro finished in the top 10 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team finished up the Horizon League Championships on Tuesday.
Mauro shared 10th with a 222 (75-76-71), the first Titan in the top 10 since Kyle Gaines was seventh in 2017, his sixth top-10 effort on the year. The 227 was also 15 shots better than his score last season. He ended the final round of the season with a one-under 71, posting seven pars on the front nine and four birdies and four pars on the back nine. He led the team with 34 pars and was second with eight pars in the tournament and tied for eighth in the competition with a +5, 4.17 average on the par 4's.
Mauro ended the year with a 73.90 average, 10th in school history, while his 75.00 career average currently stands fifth in the school record book.
Freshman
Vincent Levesque tied for 37th with a 235 (82-73-80). His final 18 saw him knock in eight pars and two birdies and he led the team with nine birdies overall. He was also tied for first amongst the field with a -2, 2.83 average on the par 3's.
Juniors
Ryan Sangchompuphen and
Matthew Schultz shared 39th with a 237, while freshman
Austin Brancaccio was 44th with a 241 (78-82-82). Sangchompuphen (77-80-80) ended with 11 pars and Schultz registered eight pars and two birdies.
Detroit Mercy claimed ninth at the tournament with a 927 (312-304-311) at the par 72, 6,868-yard El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida. The 927 team score was the best for the Titans since tallying a 219 on the same course in 2017.
