INDIANAPOLIS – Detroit Mercy softball outfielder
Kara Wolfbauer was named to the Valeo Horizon League Softball All-Academic Team as voted on by each member institution's Faculty Athletics Representative and announced by the league office.
Wolfbauer, a senior from St. Clair Shores, Mich., was named the University of Detroit Mercy Class of 2023 Valedictorian holding a 3.92 GPA with a double major in Communications and Psychology. She is the seventh Titan student-athlete to earn the Valedictorian distinction and the second in a four-year span, following Sarah Hirschmann in 2020. She is also a four-time Horizon League Honor Roll selection and four-time Detroit Mercy Athletic Director Honor Roll selection.
Wolfbauer also received many honors at the 2023 College of Liberal Arts & Education Honors Convocation in addition to several leadership honors. She was named the John Daniels Student Leader of the Year Award for showing outstanding growth throughout her undergraduate career and committing herself in the role of servant leader. Wolfbauer also earned the Communication Excellence Award.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Horizon League All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits, and participate in 50 percent of the team's overall contests or 20 percent of overall contests for pitchers. An Honorable Mention is awarded to student-athletes who received at least 25 percent of votes, but did not make the All-Academic team.
2023 Highlights:
- Started in 32 games in center field.
- Leads the team in doubles (4) and sacrifice bunts (5).
- Ranks second on the team in hits (14), at bats (78) and starts (32) while ranking third in total bases (18).
- Hit .500 (5-for-10) with two multi-hit games and two doubles in the Metro Series against arch-rival Oakland.
