Jenna Higgins added two RBI off a single and double as Detroit Mercy rolled past IU Indy, 11-3, in six innings to kick off home opening doubleheader action on on Friday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark.
The nightcap was a wild one as UDM batted around to rally from 11-1 down with 11 runs in the sixth inning, sparked by junior
Claire Borg, who posted five RBI with a three-run double and the go-ahead two-run homer for a 12-11 lead. However, the Titans couldn't hold on, as the Jags posted seven runs in the top of the seventh to win 18-12 and foil the possible comeback for the ages.
Tanguay also added a three-run double in the sixth inning, giving her five RBI on the day. Junior
Liv Peterson picked up where she left off at MSU on Wednesday, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, belting two home runs with a solo shot in the fourth and a two-run bomb in the sixth.
Freshman
Savannah Schultz picked up her second consecutive win with seven strikeouts, going the distance in 6.0 innings of work in game one.
Junior
Jada Davis went 3-for-5 on the day with three runs, while sophomore
Wendy Ketola hit 3-for-3 with three runs scored in game one.
Game 1 Recap:
• After IU Indy took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, Babcock delivered a two-run single, followed by an RBI single from Higgins and a sacrifice fly from senior
Trinity Fessler to move UDM to a 4-2 lead.
• Schultz added a fielder's choice, followed by a two-run double from freshman
Hannah Schlachter, giving the Titans a commanding 7-2 lead in the fourth.
• IU Indy made a throwing error, followed by Higgins ' RBI single in the fifth, which added two more runs.
• Tanguay's two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning sealed the deal.
Game 2 Recap:
• The Jags took a 4-0 lead with a run in the second and three more in the third.
• Peterson's solo shot put the Titans on the board in the fourth inning.
• IU Indy tacked on four more runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh to move ahead 11-1.
• Down to their final three outs, the Titans mounted their epic comeback beginning with Borg's three-run double. Peterson followed with her two-run homer, cutting the deficit to 11-6.
• Higgins then added an RBI single, followed by a three-run double from Tanguay, pulling the Titans within a run at 11-10.
• Borg's clutch two-run homer completed the comeback, giving the Titans a 12-11 lead.
• The Jags then responded, hanging a crooked number of their own with seven runs (four unearned) in the top of the seventh to salvage the win.
The Titans and Jags close out the series on Saturday, April 4, at noon.
