DETROIT (7/18/23) –
Detroit Mercy women's basketball Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Nicole "Colie" Shelwick has been promoted to Associate Head Coach while Director of Operations, Andrea Cecil was promoted to Assistant Coach announced Head Coach Kate Achter.

"We are so proud to announce the promotion of Colie to Associate Head Coach," said Achter. "Over the last year, our program growth has been largely dependent on the organization of our recruiting. We needed to be visible and accessible to players and programs across the state. Colie took that challenge personally, and never looked back. As recruiting coordinator, she has pushed our staff to be creative in our approach, all while keeping the big picture for our program in mind. Colie has more than earned this title promotion, and we all know she will continue to help our program push forward and thrive."

"Andrea has excelled in her role as director of operations this past year," added Achter. "She is detail oriented, flexible, and a great communicator. We've felt all along that she was destined to be on court with our staff. Her basketball IQ and ability to relay information quickly resembles someone who has done this for years. Our staff and players will be better with Andrea being active on the floor, and she has certainly earned the opportunity to grow within our program."

Under the guidance of Shelwick and Cecil during the 2022-23 season, the women's hoops squad increased their win total by four games beginning with a win over Canisius which snapped a 24-game home court losing skid. The Titans also secured a series sweep over Robert Morris in #HLWBB play and also upset defending league champion IUPUI for the first time in program history. Additionally, Amaya Burch (the coaching staff's first recruit) earned All-Freshman Team honors after scoring in double-figures 12 times while grabbing 10 boards or more in three games. She also led the team in 3-pointers made (29) while ranking second with three double-doubles and third in rebounds per game (4.7).

Shelwick arrived at Detroit Mercy after spending the 2021-22 campaign as an Assistant Coach on Achter's staff at Loyola Chicago. In her lone season at Loyola during the 2021-22 campaign, Shelwick helped guide the Ramblers to a 18-12 record, which was the highest win total since the 1988-89 season, and a Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) quarterfinal birth. Shelwick also served at the team's defensive coordinator helping the squad finish in the top-40 nationally in three NCAA defensive categories including 3-point field goal defense (12th), scoring defense (25th) and field goal percentage defense (37th). Under her guidance, two student-athletes earned MVC All-Conference honors in Allison Day and Freshman of the Year Maya Chandler.

Shelwick earned a Master of Education and Administration Degree from Central Methodist in 2014. She was two-sport athlete during her collegiate years at Belhaven University in Jackson, Miss. where she earned a Bachelor of Art Degree in Communication.

Cecil came to the Titans after a standout career as a women's basketball student-athlete at Florida Gulf Coast and Bowling Green respectively. She eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone in her first season at FGCU as redshirt-senior finishing her career with 1090 points while posting 43 career double figures games along with 535 rebounds, 103 assists, 68 steals and 58 blocks in 143 games played with 59 starts. Cecil also connected on 144 total 3-pointers at 35.3% clip.

Cecil earned a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from FGCU in 2022 and Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science from BGSU in 2020.
