MUNCIE, Ind. (9/10/2023) – Freshman
David Swab posted his first collegiate under-par round to finish in the top 20 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team concluded Ball State's Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational on Sunday.
In the final round of the season opener, Detroit Mercy tallied a 299 to take eighth with a 908 (307-302-299) at the par 70, 6,438-yard Delaware Country Club. Last year, the Titans had two rounds under 300 all season long.
Swab was a big reason the Titans were under 300 as he finished his collegiate debut with a 2-under 68 and shared 15th with a 221 (77-76-68). The 68 was the lowest score by a Titan freshman since Anthony Occhiuto shot a 3-under 68 in the final round of the NKU Fall Collegiate Classic in 2018.
Swab knocked in five birdies and 10 pars in the final round and led the team and was fifth in the competition with nine total birdies.
Senior
Alek Mauro tied for 44th with a 228 (75-74-79), while junior
Marko Banic tied for 48th with a career-best 229 (76-76-77).
Freshman
Mason Sokolowski shared 57th with a 232 (81-76-75) and sophomore
Austin Brancaccio finished in 64th with a 239 (83-75-81).
The Titans will be back in action next week as they compete in Valparaiso's Fall Invitational at Sand Creek Country Club from Sept. 18-19.
