Titans Drop Metro Series Battle at Arch-Rival Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. (1-13-24) - Senior Jada Moorehead scored a season-high 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting just missing her career high by a point as Detroit Mercy dropped an 89-55 decision to arch-rival Oakland in Metro Series action on Saturday afternoon at the OU Credit Union Arena.

Freshman Paris Gilmore added seven points while senior Irene Murua had six points with a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Latifa Amzil and graduate student Imani McNeal each had five points while Freshman Kamari Forrest and graduate student Cyd Rivera chipped in with four points each.

Oakland (7-8, 3-4 HL) jumped out to a 26-15 first-quarter lead and never looked back. For the game, Detroit Mercy's (11-7, 4-3 HL) turnovers proved to be pivotal as the Titans committed 21 that led to 25 OU points while the Golden Grizzlies also grabbed 13 steals defensively.

OU opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 37-17 lead by the first media timeout. Amzil ended the run with her fifth triple of the season followed by a layup from sophomore Amaya Burch to cut into the deficit. Amzil added another layup as the Titans trailed by 18 points, 42-24, at the half.

UDM found itself on the wrong side of a run for a second time as OU went on a 10-2 spurt to start the second half. Murua, Moorehead, and Gilmore each hit a pair of free throws along with a technical free throw which accounted for all seven of the Titans' points as they trailed 57-31 at the 5:00 minute mark. Freshman Makayla Jackson hit a tough step back in the paint for the Titans' first bucket from the field at the 4:35 mark. Moorehead and Hooper each had buckets to close out the frame with UDM trailing 68-38.

The Golden Grizzlies went on to close out the game in the fourth quarter for the third conference win of the season.

Detroit Mercy returns home for a game against #HLWBB leader Green Bay on Thursday, Jan 18, at 7 p.m.
