DETROIT (11/20/2024) -- The University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics was once again in the 90's for outstanding success in graduating student-athletes as the Titans were lauded for their efforts in the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR), which the NCAA released on Wednesday afternoon.
Detroit Mercy registered 91.0% - the second highest in school history behind the 92.0% in 2010-11 - which gives graduation information about the most recent six-year graduating class of students and student-athletes who entered as freshmen in 2017-18.
"This high percentage shows the dedication of our students to balancing the rigors of academic study with the demands of athletic training," said Director of Student-Athlete Services Amy Gasahl '11 (MBA). "This balance builds character, resilience, and well-rounded individuals. Combined with the dedication of our professors and staff, it is a testament to the unwavering spirit and commitment of our Detroit Mercy Titans."
For the 20th straight year, Detroit Mercy ranked among the top five in the state – tied for second overall with Michigan State – in the GSR, trailing only Michigan's 96.0%. The Titans have now also recorded 90.0% or better eight times since the NCAA started collecting and releasing the information in 2004-05.
UDM had four teams register perfect scores and three other programs that exceeded the national average.
Detroit Mercy student-athletes in women's fencing, women's lacrosse, women's soccer and softball all had a perfect 100.0% in the GSR. Women's track and field and cross country (96.0%), men's soccer (94.0%), and men's track and field and cross country (88.0%) were all above the national mark in their respective sport, while women's basketball (92.0%) and women's golf (90.0%) were in the 90th percentile.
"The increases and record highs in graduation success rates over the last two decades demonstrate the unique talents, abilities and tenacity of college athletes to achieve academic excellence, while performing at the highly competitive level of Division I athletics," said Robert Davies, president emeritus of Central Michigan and chair of the Division I Committee on Academics. "The Committee on Academics applauds student-athletes for their remarkable achievements and celebrates college educators and campus leaders for their commitment to advancing student-athlete academic success."
