DETROIT (11-6-24) – Fresh off their 2-1 victory over No. 6 seed Purdue Fort Wayne in quarterfinal action, the No. 3 seed Detroit Mercy women's soccer team continues the 2024 #HLWSOC Championship with a semifinal showdown against No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. host No. 1 seed Milwaukee. The match will be broadcast live from Engelmann Stadium on ESPN+ with Greg Rakestraw on the call.
 
We Proved Them Wrong:
• After the win against the Mastodons, Detroit Mercy has reached the 10-win mark for the first time since the 2016 season.
• UDM finished the regular season (9-7-2, 7-1-2 HL) third in the #HLWSOC league standings with 23 points.
• Earned No. 3 seed in the 2024 #HLWSOC Championships after being picked to finish eighth in the 2024 #HLWSOC Preseason Poll receiving 54 points.
• Went 4-0-2 on the road in league play
• The Titans' epic 5-0 Metro Series beatdown at arch-rival Oakland (10/30) was either team's biggest margin of victory since the Metro Series inception in 2014.
• It was also UDM's largest margin of victory in HL play since the Titans defeated Green Bay 5-0 in 2015
• Also, largest league road win margin since defeating YSU 5-0 in 2002, and the largest road win margin since a 10-0 victory at Marygrove.
• Detroit Mercy's 3-2 come-from-behind win at IU Indy the first #HLWSOC win for the Titans over the Jags.
• With the 1-1 tie at Milwaukee, UDM recorded their first #HLWSOC point against the Panthers since the 2007 season.
 
Four Women's Soccer Student-Athletes Earn #HLWSOC All-League Honors
• For the second consecutive season, junior midfielder Abbey Lodato was named All-League First Team and was joined this year by graduate student forward Joyelle Washington. Sophomore defender Leila Lanier was named All-League Second Team after earning All-Freshman Team honors last season. Midfielder Sam Sickinger was named to the All-Freshman team
 
Our COY is Better Than Yours:
• After leading the Titans (9-7-2, 7-1-2 HL) to a third-place regular season finish in the league standings with 23 points and No. 3 seed in the #HLWSOC Championships when they were picked to finish eighth in the pre-season poll, Head Coach Steve Shelton was named the Coach of the Year.
 
Scouting the Norse
Northern Kentucky finished 10-6-1 (8-1-1 HL) on the season to earn the No. 2 seed with 25 points. The Norse are riding a nine-game unbeaten streak since falling 2-0 to No. 1 seed Milwaukee back on Sept. 19th. NKU was selected to finish third in the 2024 Under Armour #HLWSOC Pre-Season Poll.

Oct. 20, 2024 – Detroit Mercy 1 vs Northern Kentucky 2:
Graduate student Joyelle Washington posted her sixth goal of the season off freshman Kyleen Bradow's third career assist, but it was not enough as Detroit Mercy saw its #HLMSOC unbeaten streak come to an end with a 2-1 setback to Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at Titan Field.
•  NKU has now defeated the Titans in three consecutive meetings.

Sophomore Sophia Blankenship recorded a shot while senior Jazmine Scott made three saves as No. 6 seed Detroit Mercy put forth a valiant effort but came up short with a 1-0 setback at No. 3 seed Northern Kentucky in #HLWSOC Championship quarterfinal action on Sunday afternoon. The Titans (7-9-3, 5-5 HL) qualified for post-season play for the first time since the 2018 season.

Nov. 3, 2024 – No. 3 Detroit Mercy 2 vs No. 6 Purdue Fort Wayne 1:
After #HLWSOC All-Freshman Team selection Sam Sickinger scored the equalizer, junior Soraya Puerto-Khalil delivered the game-winner, lifting No. 3 seed Detroit Mercy to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over No. 6 seed Purdue Fort Wayne in quarterfinal action on Sunday afternoon. The Titans advanced will now take on No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky in 2024 #HLWSOC Championship semifinal action on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. ET at host Milwaukee.
 
Graduate student Marisa Silver picked up her eighth win, making a season second-best eight saves. Junior Abbey Lodato and freshman Mya Mascaro assisted on Sickinger's goal while sophomore Natalia Sobh added her first assist of the season along with the team-best fifth helper from freshman Kyleen Bradow on the game-winner.
 
All Day Abbey:
• Junior Abbey Lodato is tied for the team lead in goals (8 – T-3rd HL), ranks second in points (18 – T 3rd HL), and is tied in game-winning goals (3 – T-3rd HL).
• Recorded second assist helping No. 3 seed UDM to a 2-1 win over No. 6 seed PFW in 2024 #HLWSOC quarterfinal action (11/3).
• Netted two goals, including the game-winner, to lead Detroit Mercy to a 2-1 win at Cleveland State.

• Washington has proven to be deadly after any kickoff in the second half scoring five of her eight goals in quick strike fashion.
• She scored just 53 seconds into the second half for the equalizer at IU Indy (10/5).
• With UDM trailing 2-0 at the half against WSU, she scored just 56 seconds after the second-half kickoff and followed with her second goal just 20 seconds later to tie the game.
• NKU went up 2-0 at the 53:52 mark, Washington responded by scoring following the kick just 15 seconds later (54:07) to put the Titans on the board.
• After Toupin scored at the 56:57 mark against PFW, Washington scored just 41 seconds later off the kickoff at 57:38 putting the Titans up 3-1.

• Graduate student forward Erica Toupin ranks second on the team in points (16 – 4th HL), third in goals (7 – 4th HL), and tied for the team lead in game-winning goals (3 – T 3rd HL) while coming off the bench.
• Posted seventh goal in UDM's 5-0 dominating Metro Series win at arch-rival Oakland (10/30) to clinch the No. 3 seed in the #HLWSOC Championship (10/30).
• Fired in her sixth goal of the season off a long-range free kick for the game-winner in UDM's 3-1 triumph over PFW (10/26).
• Posted second assist at Milwaukee (9/29).
• Named Under Armour® #HLWSOC Offensive Player of the Week (9/23).

• Added fourth assist in UDM's 3-1 triumph over PFW (10/26).
• Posted third assist on the game-winning goal in UDM's 4-3 come-from-behind win over Wright State (10/10).
• Recorded four points with a goal and two assists to lead Detroit Mercy to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory at IU Indy (10/5).
• Scored first goal of the season eight minutes into the game giving the Titans a 1-0 lead.

• Puerto-Khalil earned 2024 Valeo #HLWSOC All-Academic Team Honorable Mention
• She holds a 3.91 GPA in Nursing and is a Horizon League Honor Roll Fall and Spring selection and two-time Detroit Mercy Athletic Director Honor Roll selection.
• She also is a 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Team selection.
 
Defense Helping the Offense:
• Redshirt senior defender Madelyn Baucom is tied for the team lead in assists (3 – T-8th) from her defensive position.
• Added a pair of assists on two of Washington's three goals helping lead UDM to a wild 4-3 come-from-behind win over Wright Stat (10/10).
• Recorded her first career in a Titan uniform on Jen Mateyak's first career goal in UDM's 2-1 win over RMU (9/22).
• Graduate student defender Hailey Matthews added her second assist in the 2-1 win at CSU (10/13) and first assist of the season at BGSU (8/15). She ranked third on the team in assists from her defensive position last season.

• Freshman Sam Sickinger is tied for four on the team in points (6) points with two goals and two assists
• She came up clutch, scoring her second game-winning goal of the season to complete UDM's wild 4-3 come-from-behind win over Wright State (10/10).
• Added second assist on Abbey Lodato's game-winning goal in UDM's 2-1 win at CSU (10/13).
• Had quite the breakout game recording her first career game-winning goal to lead Detroit Mercy to a 3-1 #HLWSOC season-opening win over Youngstown State (9/19)

Freshman Firsts:
Mya Mascaro also posted her second assist helping No. 3 seed UDM to a 2-1 win over No. 6 seed PFW in 2024 #HLWSOC quarterfinal action (11/3).
• There was a Natalie-to-Natalie connection as Natalie Dye took a feed from Natalie Vance and connected on a missile shot into the upper right 90 from just outside the 18-yard line for her first career goal off Vance's first career assist in UDM's 5-0 dominating Metro Series win at arch-rival Oakland (10/30) to clinch the No. 3 seed in the #HLWSOC Championship (10/30).
• Vance also added her second assist of the game against the Golden Grizzlies.
Amelia Streberger is tied for fourth on the team in points (4) recording her first career goal against Utah Valley (8/18) and second against Chicago State (9/5).
• Mascaro also posted her first career assist on Lodato's second goal against the Cougars (9/5).
 
On the Board:
• Sophomore Natalia Sobh added her first assist of the season on the game-winning goal propelling No. 3 seed UDM to a 2-1 win over No. 6 seed PFW in 2024 #HLWSOC quarterfinal action (11/3).
• Junior Jen Mateyak posted her first career goal in UDM's 2-1 win over RMU (9/22).

• Graduate Student Marisa Silver picked up her eighth win, making a season second-best eight saves.
• Named #HLWSOC named Under Armour® #HLWSOC Defensive Player of the Week after securing her second shutout with six saves in UDM's 5-0 dominating Metro Series win at arch-rival Oakland (10/30) to clinch the No. 3 seed in the #HLWSOC Championship (10/30).
• Added fifth and six wins against WSU (10/10) and CSU (10/13).
• Recorded fourth win that marked UDM's first #HLWSOC win over the IU Indy to remain undefeated in league play.
• Picked up third win of the season in goal recording four saves vs RMU (9/22) and her third win vs YSU (9/19).
• Posted three saves and shut out YSU in the second half in UDM's 3-1 win.
• Made four saves and shut out RMU in the first half while only surrendering a second-half penalty kick goal in the Titans' 2-1 win.
• Made two saves against Chicago State (9/5), picking up her first shutout since the 2021 season.
• She faced 30 shots making nine saves against Utah Valley (8/18) just missing her career-high of 11.
• Silver battled back from injury to make her first start in goal against BGSU (8/15) since the 2022 season. Her last start was at FGSU on Aug. 18, 2022, where she suffered a season-ending injury. Last season, she only saw action in one game against PFW (10/8).
 
Got the Call:
• Senior transfer Chantelle Symes picked up her second win, making three saves against PFW (10/26).
• Earned first career shutout in a Titan uniform over Madonna (9/2).
• Symes made her first career start for UDM between the pipes against Utah Valley (8/18) making four saves while holding the Wildcats scoreless in the first half.
 
Mikayla Duncan Selected to Serve in the 2024 Civic Captain Initiative by The Team:
• Graduate student Mikayla Duncan was one of 27 student-athletes selected to serve as a Civic Captain in the 2024 Civic Captain Initiative by The Team which is a nonprofit organization that creates award-winning programming focused on integrating nonpartisan civic engagement and voter participation into college athletics. Their mission is focused on developing great teammates, inspiring leaders, and empowering citizens.
 
The Team's new Civic Captain Initiative is a program focused on recruiting, training, and empowering student-athletes from targeted states (PA, NC, AZ, and MI) to utilize their platforms to organize their peers to vote. For the next three months, these student-athletes will champion The Team and its programming, improving civic and voting practices within their athletic department and across their community as a whole.
 
Senior Day Salute:
Before the match against WMU, UDM honored 10 seniors Samantha Ceballos, Mikayla Duncan, Tia Jokic, Hailey Matthews, Adriana Mroz, Danica Paesano, Marisa Silver, Justice Tillotson, Erica Toupin, and Olivia Zulewski for their hard work and dedication to the program.

Titans Smash Arch-Rival Oakland in #MetroSeries Rout
Oct. 30, 2024 – Detroit Mercy 5 at Oakland 0:
For the second consecutive game, graduate student Joyelle
Redshirt Justice Tillotson, freshman Natalie Dye, sophomore Leila Lanier, and graduate students Joyelle Washington and Erica Toupin each scored a goal as Detroit Mercy matched their best offense performance of the season with a 5-0 Metro Series beatdown over arch-rival Oakland on Wednesday night at Oakland Soccer Field. The Titans finished the regular season with a 4-0-2 road record in league play to earn the No. 3 seed in the upcoming 2024 #HLWSOC Championship and will play No. 6 seed Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at Titan Field.
 
Titans Close Out #HLWSOC Home Slate in Style with Win Over Purdue Fort Wayne
Oct. 26, 2024 – Detroit Mercy 3 vs Purdue Fort Wayne 1:
For the second consecutive game, graduate student Joyelle Washington scored a goal for her seventh of the season, while graduate student Erica Toupin added her sixth tally off the bench as Detroit Mercy closed out the #HLWSOC home slate with a big 3-1 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday afternoon at Titan Field. Freshman Kyleen Bradow and junior Soraya Puerto-Khalil each added their team-best fourth assist on Washington's goal.
 
Oct. 20 – Detroit Mercy 1 vs Northern Kentucky 2:

Lodato's Two Goals Propels Detroit Mercy Past Cleveland State
Oct. 13 – Detroit Mercy 2 at Cleveland State 1:
Junior Abbey Lodato netted two goals off assists from graduate students Joyelle Washington and Hailey Matthews and freshman Sam Sickinger to lead Detroit Mercy to a 2-1 win at Cleveland State on Sunday Afternoon at Krenzler Field to remain undefeated in #HLMSOC play.
 
Just nine minutes into the game, Lodato got Detroit Mercy (7-6-2, 5-0-2 HL) on the board as she took a long feed from Matthews, weaved through two defenders, and fired a shot that deflected off the right leg of Cleveland State (1-13-1, 0-7 HL) goalkeeper Elyse Broderick into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
 
The game remained 1-1 well into the second half until the 62nd minute. Washington took a throw-in, drove deep into the box down the left side, and sent a cross over to Sickinger who slotted a pass over to Lodato. Lodato caught a break as she fired a shot that deflected off a CSU defender into the back of the net for the game-winner.
 
Washington's Hat Trick Leads Titans to Wild Come-From-Behind Win Over Wright State
Oct. 10 – Detroit Mercy 4 vs Wright State 3:
Graduate student Joyelle Washington delivered a performance for the ages, scoring a hat trick to lead Detroit Mercy to a wild 4-3 come-from-behind win over Wright State on Thursday night at Titan Field to remain undefeated in #HLMSOC play. Freshman Sam Sickinger also came up clutch scoring her second game-winning goal of the season.
 
Washington's hat trick was the first for UDM (6-6-2, 4-0-2 HL) since Rachel Russo against Purdue Fort Wayne during the 2017 season. It also marked the first hat trick in league play since Mary Parker against Cleveland State in 2006.
 
Redshirt senior Madelyn Baucom added two assists on Washington's goals, while Redshirt senior Justice Tillotson posted her first career assist in a Titan uniform. Soraya Puerto-Khalil also added a helper on Sickinger's game-winner.
 
Oct. 5 – Detroit Mercy 3 at IU Indy 2:
Junior Soraya Puerto-Khalil posted four points with a goal and two assists while junior Abbey Lodato scored her second game-winning goal of the season giving Detroit Mercy a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory at IU Indy on Saturday afternoon at Michael A. Carroll Stadium to remain unbeaten in #HLWSOC play. The win also marked the first HL win for the Titans over the Jags. 
 
UDM scored the game's first goal just eight minutes into the contest when Puerto-Khalil found the back of the net for the first time this season. The host Jaguars answered a minute later with the equalizer. IU Indy then took a 2-1 lead in the 25th minute heading into the halftime break.
 
Redshirt senior Joyelle Washington scored her second goal of the season just 53 seconds into the second half leveling the match at 2-2 before Lodato fired home the game-winner in the 65th minute to seal the game.
 
Sept. 29 – Detroit Mercy 1 at Milwaukee 1:
For the second straight game, junior Abbey Lodato scored a goal to lead Detroit Mercy to a draw in #HLWSOC play as the Titans and Milwaukee played to a 1-1 stalemate on Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium. Sophomore Leila Lanier and graduate student Erica Toupin each picked up an assist on Lodato's tally. Graduate student Marisa Silver posted four saves in goal and is unbeaten in her last four matches.
 
Sept. 26 – Detroit Mercy 1 at Green Bay 1:
Junior Abbey Lodato scored her fourth goal of the season off Joyelle Washington's first career assist in a Titan uniform to give Detroit Mercy a 1-1 draw at Green Bay in #HLWSOC action from Aldo Santanga Stadium on Thursday night.
 
Titans Hold Off Robert Morris for Second Consecutive #HLWSOC Win
Sept. 22 – Detroit Mercy 2 vs Robert Morris 1:
Junior Jen Mateyak posted her first career goal while graduate student Erica Toupin added the game-winner in the second half as Detroit Mercy took down Robert Morris, 2-1, to earn their second #HLWSOC win on Sunday afternoon at Titan Field. Redshirt senior Madelyn Baucom delivered her first career in a Titan uniform, while freshman Sam Sickinger added her first career assist on Toupin's game-winner after scoring her first career tally on Thursday night. Graduate student Marisa Silver picked up her third win of the season in goal making four saves.
 
Titans Freeze Penguins in #HLWSOC Opener
Sept. 19 – Detroit Mercy 2 vs Youngstown State 1:
Freshman Sam Sickinger had quite the breakout game recording her first career game-winning goal leading Detroit Mercy to a 3-1 #HLWSOC season-opening win over Youngstown State on Thursday Night. The Titans moved to a perfect 13-0 all-time record against YSU at Titan Field.
 
Senior Joyelle Washington scored her first career goal in a Titan (3-6, 1-0 HL) uniform while graduate student Erica Toupin added her team-best fourth goal and first assist of the season. Freshman Kyleen Bradow also added her second helper of the season on Sickinger's game-winner.
 
Sept. 8 – Detroit Mercy 0 vs Western Michigan 3:
Junior Jen Mateyak posted a shot on goal while freshman Sam Sickinger and junior Abbey Lodato recorded a shot as Detroit Mercy fell 3-0 to Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Titan Field for Senior Day.
 
Titans Dominate Cougars Earning Second Straight Win
Sept. 5 – Detroit Mercy 5 vs Chicago State 0:
Detroit Mercy's offense was hitting on cylinders led by junior Abbey Lodato who racked up five points off two goals and an assist as the Titans rolled over Chicago State in dominating fashion with a 5-0 win on Thursday afternoon at Titan Field. Sophomore defender Leila Lanier added her first career goal off the first career assist from freshman and fellow defender Kyleen Bradow while Graduate Student Marisa Silver made two saves picking up her first shutout since the 2021 season.
 
Graduate Student Erica Toupin and freshman Amelia Streberger each added their third and second goals of the season respectively to round out the scoring for the Titans with freshman Mya Mascaro adding her first career assist.
 
Titans Earn First Win of the Season
Sept. 2 – Detroit Mercy 2 vs Madonna 0:
Graduate student Erica Toupin scored both goals while senior goalkeeper Chantelle Symes earned her first career shutout in a Titan uniform as Detroit Mercy earned a 2-0 victory over Madonna on Labor Day Monday afternoon at Titan Field.
 
The game was scoreless until Toupin put the Titans ahead 1-0 in the 44th minute. She then added an insurance tally late in the second half in the 84th minute to secure UDM's first win of the season.
 
Aug.25 – Detroit Mercy 0 at Morehead State 1:
Senior Adriana Mroz, junior Soraya Puerto-Khalil, and graduate student Hailey Matthews each recorded a shot on frame as Detroit Mercy played Morehead State even for the first half but it was not enough as the Titans surrendered a goal to open the second half falling 1-0 to the Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
 
Junior Abbey Lodato and freshman Amelia Streberger also added two shots each to round out nine total for UDM (0-4). Graduate student Marisa Silver got the start in goal making three saves.
 
Aug.22 – Detroit Mercy 0 at Kentucky 2:
Senior Chantelle Symes faced 30 shots making five saves in goal as Detroit Mercy suffered a 2-0 setback at Kentucky on Thursday night at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
 
The Wildcats (3-0-0) were on the attack all night, holding the Titans (0-3-0) to just one shot on goal by graduate student Joyelle Washington. After a scoreless first half, Kentucky scored the first goal of the match in the 51st minute before adding an insurance tally in the 82nd minute.
 
Aug.18 – Detroit Mercy 2 vs. Utah Valley 5:
Freshman Amelia Streberger scored her first career goal while junior Abbey Lodato converted a penalty kick but it was not enough as Detroit Mercy fell 5-2 in home opening action on Sunday night at Titan Field.
 
UDM (0-2) jumped in front, 1-0, just two minutes into the action as Soraya Puerto-Khalil sent a shot on frame that was saved, but Streberger was right there to redirect it past the keeper.
 
Utah Valley (2-0) knotted it at 1-1 just two minutes later until the 26th minute when the Wolverines were called for a handball in the box. That set up a penalty kick that Lodato knocked in giving the Titans a 2-1 lead at the half. However, it was all Utah Valley in the second half as the Wolverines racked up four goals on 20 shots to put the game out of reach.
 
Aug.15 – Detroit Mercy 1 at Bowling Green 3:
Justice Tillotson scored her first goal in a Titan uniform but it wasn't enough for Detroit Mercy fell 3-1 at Bowling Green in season-opening action on Thursday night. Hailey Matthews connected on a corner kick in the eighth minute that bounced around in the box before being knocked in by Tillotson to make it 1-0. It remained that way until late in the first half, as BGSU knotted the game at 1-1 in the 41st minute. The teams went into the halftime break tied at 1-1 until the Falcons broke through in the second half with two goals.

The Team:
The 2024 season marks the 31st year of the women's soccer program.
Head Coach Steve Shelton is in his sixth season with the program.

Detroit Mercy has 28 student-athletes from the state of Michigan

The Titans have five student-athletes from outside the state of Michigan with two from California, two from North Carolina and one from Ohio.

Graduate student Hailey Matthews and redshirt senior transfer Madelyn Baucom are from North Carolina while freshman Natalie Dye is the lone student-athlete from Ohio

When Will They Learn?
With the Metro Series victory over arch-rival Oakland to conclude the 2023 regular season, Detroit Mercy qualified for the #HLWSOC Championship for the first time since the 2018 season as the No. 6 seed. Before the season, UDM was picked to finish ninth in the 2023 Preseason Poll receiving 40 points and moving up one spot from being picked 10th prior to the 2022 season.
