Amaya Burch scored 12 consecutive third-quarter points finishing with 16 on 6-of-10 shooting, 2-for-4 from 3-point range, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line to pull Detroit Mercy to a three-point deficit at the end of the frame at 61-58. However, the Titans' offense stalled in the fourth quarter leading to a 77-67 setback at Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon at the Gates Sports Center.
Junior
Emma Trawally Porta was the only other Titan in double figures just missing a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Graduate student
Imani McNeal had eight points and six rebounds while senior
Lucia Fleta Robles also had eight points with six boards.
Freshman
Paris Gilmore and sophomore
Myonna Hooper each chipped in with seven points.
Detroit Mercy (15-12, 8-8 HL) trailed by eight points, 54-46, when Burch went to work hitting a jumper followed by a layup, a 3-pointer, a pair of free throws, and another 3-pointer to pull the Titans within three points at 61-58 going into the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, McNeal converted an and-1 layup and free throw to keep UDM close at 65-61 with 7:20 to go. However, the Titans only scored two points over the next five minutes off a pair of free throws before freshman
Makayla Jackson made a layup in the final minute for the Titans' second field goal.
In the first half, It was raining 3-balls for both squads in the first quarter as the Titans shot 3-for-7 (42.9%) while PFW (17-10, 10-6 HL) hit 6-for-9 (66.7%) closing out on a 9-0 run for an 8-point lead.
The Titans were down 10 points, 30-20, to open the second quarter. They used a 6-0 run to stay within nine points, 38-29, by the media timeout. UDM then responded as Gilmore hit a triple followed by a layup from Murua and an-and-1 layup and free throw by Jackson to cap off an 11-0 run giving the Titans their first lead since it was 2-0 at 40-38. The Dons then added the last five points to take a 43-40 lead at the half.
