Titans Fall To Wright State

DETROIT (2/22/2024) -- Senior Jayden Stone poured in a team-high 25 points and sophomore Marcus Tankersley added 23, but the Wright State offense was too strong as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a 93-78 contest in its home finale on Thursday.

Prior to the game, the Titans honored a pair of seniors in Edoardo Del Cadia and Kyle LeGreair.

Stone - the Horizon League leading scorer at 21.1 points per game - was 8-of-16 from the field with four rebounds and three assists and Tankersley was 10-of-19 with five boards and four assists. Del Cadia added 14 points, five rebounds and tied his career high with four steals and junior Mak Manciel tallied 10 points.

Detroit Mercy (1-28, 1-17 HL) trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, but cut it down to just 43-41 at the break. Wright State (16-12, 11-6 HL) scored the second half's first basket, but the red, white, and blue responded with five straight points to jump out in front, 46-45, with 17:17 on the clock.

Tankersley started it with a basket and after a free throw from Stone, Manciel was able to get to the rim for a layup. Manciel also gave the Titans a 49-48 advantage as he once again drove to the basket for a bucket and was fouled, hitting the free throw with 14:53 left.

That is when the Raiders went on a 17-0 run over the next three minutes to open a 65-49 lead. UDM got back in it with two straight three-point plays as Tankersley got to the hoop for a layup and was fouled and the next time down the court, Stone went right to the rim for a layup and the foul to make it a 65-55 contest at the 10:46 mark.

Detroit Mercy would then get the margin under 10 twice, the first as Stone drilled a three to make it 67-58, and then he was fouled, connecting on both from the charity stripe for a 69-60 margin with 9:20 showing. From there, Wright State was able to push it back to double digits and the Titans could not recover.

LeGreair ended with four points, four rebounds and two steals, while sophomore Tyree Davis had two points and two boards with a block.

The Titans shot 51.7% (30-of-58) from the field and were 15-of-19 (78.9%) at the free-throw line, while forcing 12 turnovers and coming away with nine steals.

Both teams traded baskets early on as a steal by LeGreair set up Del Cadia's layup and the team was down just 14-12 at the 12:48 mark.

Wright State would go on a 15-6 spurt to open an 11-point lead, 29-18, but the Titans battled back with eight-straight points to cut it to 29-26 after Tankersley's jumper with 5:46 remaining. A dunk by Stone had the team down 31-28 and he later split a pair of free throws to make it a 31-29 game with 3:57 to go.

Back-to-back baskets by Tankersley and Stone cut it all the way down to one, 40-39, with less than 40 seconds left in the first half as the Titans trailed 43-41 at the break after Tankersley's floater went in with five seconds left.

Detroit Mercy will now hit the road for its final two games of the regular season as the red, white and blue play at Youngstown State next Wednesday and at Oakland next Saturday.
