Senior Alek Mauro finished his career third in school history in scoring average.
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (4/22/2024) -- Senior Alek Mauro ended his college career in style as he tallied five birdies in six holes and carded an under-par score as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team wrapped up the Horizon League Championship on Monday.

Mauro shot a 1-under 71 to share 32nd with a 228 (77-80-71). He started on the back nine and was 1-over in his first four holes, but then birdied 14, 15 and 16, parred 17, and knocked in two more birdies on 18 and 1. He tied for the team lead with nine birdies and was second with 29 pars.

He ended the year with a 73.62 average for sixth in school history and the best since David Byrne in 2010, while his career 74.61 mark is third in the record book behind two fellow Canadians in Byrne (73.56) and Mark Sommerfeld (73.61).

Freshman David Swab led the team by tying for 25th with a 226 (76-76-74), concluding his first postseason with a 2-over 74. His final round saw him tally three birdies and 10 pars as he had nine total birdies and 28 pars.

Sophomore Austin Brancaccio shared 29th as he registered a 227 (77-75-75), including a 3-over 75 for the second-straight round. He started the round with seven straight pars and he had 13 pars with a birdie on the day. He finished the competition with a team-high 33 pars, tied for the seventh most.

Freshman Gowtham Nalluri recorded a 230 (80-77-73) and shared 37th, while freshman Mason Sokolowski had another 78 and tied for 41st with a 234 (78-78-78). Nalluri knocked in four birdies and nine pars and Sokolowski posted two birdies and nine pars.

The Titans placed eighth with a 907 (308-306-293) at the par 72, 6,761-yard El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida. The 907 team score was the best at the league championship since the 895 in 2014, while the final-round 293 was the best since shooting a 291 in the final round in 2013.
