Quick Start Helps Titans Leash Bulldogs

INDIANAPOLIS (4/27/2024) -- Senior Cat Kopchia scored a career-high six goals - including three in the first seven minutes - as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team defeated Butler, 13-11, on the road on Saturday.

The win was the second straight for the Titans, who will now head into the MAC Championship as the fourth seed and play top-seeded Central Michigan in the semifinals on Thursday.

Junior Leah Bodnar had three goals and an assist and sophomore Alyssa Jarvis scored twice. Graduate senior Marina Butler recorded a goal and an assist and junior Maddy Camm tied her career high with three caused turnovers to go with two ground balls, a draw control and a goal.

Junior Meredith Leavell started in net and tied her career high with a season-best 17 saves in 45 minutes, while freshman Sam Gargiulo played the last quarter and stopped three shots.

The Titans (5-11, 3-3 MAC) saw Leavell make a save, and Jarvis caused a turnover, which led to Kopchia's first goal just two minutes in. A little more than a minute later, Kopchia scored again, and off a save from Leavell, she found the back of the net for her hat trick, making it 3-0 with 8:16 on the clock.

Another save by Leavell led to a free position for Javis and she beat the keeper, and then senior Cecelia Vergara won a draw and a foul on Butler (2-14, 1-5 BIG EAST) led to a free position and Kocphia buried it for a 5-0 advantage.

Leavell made four more saves to blank the Bulldogs in the first. In the second, UDM took advantage of the extra attacker, and Bodnar found Butler for a 6-0 lead. Butler would score three in a row, but Bodnar netted a goal off a pass from senior Ella Brandt, and the Titans were up 7-3 at the break. Bodnar opened up the second half with a marker off a feed from Butler, and it was 8-3.

Leavell stayed on her game and made two more saves before Jarvis scored on the free position for a 9-3 advantage. Camm then found the back of the net later in the period for a 10-4 lead, and the red, white, and blue were in front 10-5 after three.

Gargiulo got the offense going in the fourth as her save with the women down led Kopchia to fire one in for an 11-5 lead.

A draw control by Jarvis led directly to a goal from Bodnar as she got her hat trick with 9:19 left in the game, and Kopchia tickled the twine for her career sixth goal for a 13-10 lead with 2:43 remaining.

Graduate senior Kiah Nuessgen had a caused turnover and tied her career high with four ground balls. Jarvis had a caused turnover and a draw control and Bodnar added a caused turnover and a ground ball.

The Titans will now get ready for the postseason for the first time since 2019 as they will travel to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, for the semifinals as game time against the Chippewas is set for 1:00 p.m.
