Titans Downed By Robert Morris In #MACtion Championship

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (5/4/2024) -- Senior Cat Kopchia ended her career with four more goals, junior Meredith Leavell broke the single-season saves record and graduate senior Marina Butler picked up her 100th career point, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team fell in the Mid-American Conference Championship, 14-10, on Saturday afternoon.

The game was tied at 6-6 late in the third, but Robert Morris (8-11) went on a 5-0 spurt and Detroit Mercy (6-12) could not recover.

Kopchia finished the season with 70 points - seventh in school history - and 62 goals - tied for fifth. Leavell made 12 saves and ended the campaign with a school-record 186 saves, a mark that has stood since UDM's second year of lacrosse in 2010.

Junior Maddy Camm tallied a career-high four goals, while sophomore Libby Cuckler added a pair of assists. Sophomore Alyssa Jarvis pulled down a team-high four draw controls and had two ground balls and a caused turnover and junior Katie Bilello had a takeaway and a GB.

UDM never had the lead as it tied the contest at 1-1 early in the first, with Kopchia getting the offense going. RMU took a 3-1 lead, but Camm took a pass from Cuckler and fired one in to make it 3-2 after one, as the Titans' defense forced a couple of takeaways from junior Leah Bodnar and Bilello.

The Titans pulled within one on a couple of occasions in the second as Kopchia scored off the free position for a 4-3 margin and she beat the keeper with 4:09 left for a 5-4 score and that's the way it was at the break.

The red, white and blue would knot it at 6-6 in the third. Off a Leavell save, Cuckler located Camm again and she netted a goal on the extra attacker and Kopchia would whip in another free position with 2:38 remaining.

The Colonials scored two in the final 1:33 in the period and ran off three straight in the fourth to run their lead to 11-6 at the 11:56 mark. Butler and Camm went back-to-back to trim the deficit to 11-8 with 9:56 showing, but RMU answered with three-straight markers. A draw control from Camm led to a goal by Bodnar and Leavell kept the Titans in the contest with two saves. Jarvis then had a caused turnover and senior Sarah Meek found Camm and she buried her fourth for a 14-10 score with 1:56 left, but time ran out on UDM.

Detroit Mercy outshot Robert Morris, 32-31 and was 16-of-18 on clears.

Camm, Kopchia and Leavell were all named to the MAC All-Tournament Team following the game.

The Titans end 2024 by making the postseason for the first time since 2019 and their first postseason win and championship appearance since 2016. Their six wins and three wins are the road were also the most since 2019.
