DETROIT (2-20-25) - Graduate Student
Emaia O'Brien scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting with five steals, becoming the second player to reach the 1000 career points milestone after fifth-year senior
Aaliyah McQueen reached the mark earlier in the season. Despite the accomplishment, Detroit Mercy dropped a 67-59 defensive battle to Youngstown State on Thursday night at Calihan Hall.
McQueen had nine points while grabbing a season-second-best 15 rebounds. Detroit Mercy (13-12, 7-10 HL) had two other players in double figures, with senior
Katie Burton scoring a career-high 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers and free throws. Sophomore
Makayla Jackson also added 11 points, going 3-for-3 on the charity stripe. Junior
Myonna Hooper also chipped in with five points.
UDM had trouble cracking Youngstown State's (10-17, 5-12 HL) zone defense, only shooting 23-for-66 (34.8%) and 5-for-23 (21.7%) from the 3-point range. Conversely, the Penguins shot 26-for-49 (53.1%) and 4-for-11 (36.4%) from long range.
The Titans took an 11-5 lead to open the game but YSU stormed back with a 16-4 run to close out the first quarter with a 21-15 lead.
Both teams scored 14 points in the second quarter with YSU holding a six-point lead, 35-29, at the break.
O'Brien hit a layup, pulling UDM within two points at 39-37 at the 6:59 mark of the third quarter. The Penguins went on to outscore the Titans 13-8 to lead by seven going into the fourth, 52-45.
YSU then added a 10-5 spurt to move ahead by 12 points, 62-50, with 3:45 to go in the final quarter and UDM couldn't pull any closer down the stretch.
