Titans Drop Season Opener At Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio (2/4/2025) – Freshman Zach Gleason scored the first two goals of his college career and junior Kyle Grant tallied a career-best six caused turnovers, but it was not enough as Detroit Mercy dropped its season opener 14-4 at Ohio State on Tuesday afternoon.

The Buckeyes (1-1) scored the first goal of the game with 13:27 left in the first quarter, before adding two more goals to take a 3-0 lead after one.

UDM responded with three unanswered goals in the second period to tie the game at 3-3. Gleason scored the first goal of the season for the Titans at the 13:43 mark in the second. Just 23 seconds later, sophomore Sean Donahue found the back of the net to make it 3-2, before junior Zach Snider tied the game at 3-3 with 12:41 to go in the opening half.

Ohio State responded, however, by closing the first half on a 6-0 run, which allowed the hosts to take a 9-3 halftime lead.

Most of the third quarter was a defensive battle until Gleason found the back of the net a second time to make it 9-4 with 4:51 remaining, but OSU added a few more for the win.

Sophomore Gavin Moore and senior Aidan Bishop each recorded an assist for the Titans, while senior goalie Ryan Richters made 16 saves.

Along with his six caused turnovers, tied for second in school history, he also picked up a career-best seven ground balls. Junior Jackson Ewald had a caused turnover and two GB's, while senior Will Marshall had a takeaway and three ground balls and rookie Ian Greenwell had three ground balls.

Detroit Mercy as a team caused 11 turnovers while going 24-of-30 on clear attempts. The Buckeyes outshot the Titans 53-28.

The Titans will stay on the road and play at Marquette on Saturday, with opening faceoff set for 3:30 p.m.
