Richters Tallies Career-High 21 Saves In LIU Setback

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (3/20/2025) -- Senior Ryan Richters posted a career-high 21 saves, and senior Chase Mahabir paced the offense with his fifth career hat trick as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team was upended, 14-9, at LIU on Saturday.

The 21 saves are tied for the fourth most in school history as Richters also added three ground balls and a caused turnover.

Mahabir scored three goals and had an assist. Senior Harold Skinner had two goals and two helpers, while redshirt freshman Marcus Thundercloud scored two goals.

The Titans (1-5, 0-2 NEC) saw LIU (7-1, 2-0 NEC) take a 2-0 lead before answering with four in a row. A faceoff win by freshman Canton Lanham started the run as freshman Andrew Parker found Mahabir for his first. Richters then came up with six of his nine saves in the first period before Mahabir set up Thundercloud, who knotted it at 2-2 at the 3:33 mark. A couple of minutes later, Mahabir beat the keeper for a second time off a pass from Skinner and UDM was in front 3-2 after one.

The Titans saw Richters secure double-digit saves early in the second before Skinner ripped another one past the goalie for a 4-2 lead with 8:29 left, but the Sharks would tie the game at 4-4 heading into the break.

LIU continued its spurt with five more to start the third before Mahabir recorded his hat trick with 3:27 remaining, while sophomore Julian Greendeer scored his first with under a minute left to make it a 10-6 game after three.

Senior Nolan Graalman netted a goal midway through the fourth, and Skinner and Thundercloud had their second markers with under five minutes left.

Lanham finished 12-of-20 in faceoffs with a team-high five ground balls. Senior Sean Henige scooped up four ground balls, while junior Eoghan Mullett ended with a caused turnover and two ground balls. Junior Zane Hitch and sophomore Gavin Moore also registered a caused turnover and GB.

The Titans won the battle of ground balls, 30-27, and were 22-of-24 on clears.

Detroit Mercy will return home to face Le Moyne next Saturday, Mar. 29, with first faceoff slated for Noon at Titan Field.

This was the first career meeting between the two schools
Richters moved past teammate Jakob Hemme into fourth place in school history with 273 saves
The last Titan to have over 20 saves in a game was Hemme, who tied a school record with 28 at Michigan in 2022
Richters has now tallied double-digit saves in all 19 games as a Titan, as his previous high in saves was 19 against Mercer and at Utah last season
Mahabir also had three goals at Hampton
Senior Kyle Grant now has a career-high 20 ground balls on the year after picking up a pair today
Lanham also won 12 faceoffs at Hampton two weeks ago
Skinner came into the season with just three goals and an assist in his first three years, but now has five goals and three assists on the season
Henige now has 55 career ground balls
