In A Flash, Titans Are Golden Over Kent State To Begin #MACtion

KENT, Ohio (3/23/2025) -- What looked to be a dreary afternoon in Ohio turned into a huge comeback victory as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team scored six in a row to down Kent State on the road in its Mid-American Conference opener on Sunday.

Senior Meredith Leavell tallied 17 saves and picked up a school-record 13 ground balls, coming up with 11 stops in the second half to help UDM's comeback effort. The 13 GB's are the most of any player in Division I this season and the most since Stetson's Sidney Heimann had 15 against Iona last year.

Junior Libby Cuckler led the offense with four goals and added an assist and senior Maddy Camm had two goals, an assist, two caused turnovers, two draw controls and five ground balls. Senior Leah Bodnar had two goals and an assist, while junior Alyssa Jarvis posted two goals, a helper and pulled down a team-high seven draws.

Detroit Mercy (4-5, 1-0 MAC) saw Kent State (5-6, 1-1 MAC) take a 6-2 lead in the second and then have an 8-5 lead late in the third when the Titans struck for six in a row across seven minutes of play.

The offensive spurt started with defense as Camm had a takeaway and that led to freshman Jaeda Jensen finding Cuckler for a marker with 40 seconds left in the period. In the fourth, Cuckler came away with a caused turnover and then scored off a pass from Camm to make it an 8-7 game at the 11:01 mark. After a draw control by senior Sophie Davis, Camm got the ball again, and she beat the keeper to knot it at 8-8.

Another draw win, this time by Jarvis, got UDM back on offense, and with the extra attacker, freshman Gabrianna Vasquez fed Cuckler, and her hat trick third goal put the red, white, and blue ahead, 9-8, with 9:49 left.

Camm added to the lead with a free position goal, and Cuckler registered her fourth almost a minute later for an 11-8 advantage with just over eight minutes to go.

Leavell put the game away with four more saves the rest of the way and Bodnar and Jensen posted goals to stop any chance of a Kent State charge.

The Titans were 22-of-23 on clears and were outshot, 33-27, but 23 of their 27 shots were on frame as they peppered the KSU goalie all game long.

Detroit Mercy will return home to host Akron next Sunday, Mar. 30, with first draw set for Noon at Titan Field.
