Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Mercyhurst To Stay Alive For NEC Playoffs

DETROIT (4/19/2025) -- Senior Chase Mahabir and redshirt freshman Marcus Thundercloud combined for nine goals, but it took grit and determination to pull this out as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team got by Mercyhurst, 14-13, on Saturday night.

It was a special win on Senior Day as the Titans honored their 12-member senior class in Aidan BishopAlly Don Jean-FrancoisNolan GraalmanBilly HartJakob HemmeSean HenigeChase MahabirWill MarshallEoghan MullettLukas NilsenRyan Richters and Joey Schmaltz prior to the game.

Mahabir led the way with five goals, including the game-winner with under a minute left. Thundercloud had four goals, and freshman Canton Lanham won a season-best 19-of-27 - the most ever by a freshman in school history and tied for the sixth most wins in the record book - and picked up a season-high 11 ground balls, tied for the third most by a Titan.

Skinner finished with a goal and an assist and Henige and Mullett each had a pair of caused turnovers.

The Titans (4-6, 3-3) won their third-straight game - their longest winning streak since 2019 - to remain in contention for a postseason bid, which they can clinch next week at Cleveland State.

UDM was up by two, 13-11, with 3:48 left when it was called for a three-minute nonreleasable penalty, and Mercyhurst (1-11, 0-6 NEC) took advantage, scoring twice to tie it up. With 2:04 left, Hart won a faceoff with the Titans down a man, and after a timeout, the red, white and blue ran out the penalty and found the back of the net as Mahabir buried one with just 47 seconds on the clock.

On the next faceoff, Lanham earned his 21st win in the circle, and Detroit Mercy was able to kill off the rest of the time, leaving the Lakers one second to send a shot across the field.

Richters finished with nine saves. Bishop posted two goals, freshman Zach Gleason had a goal and an assist, and junior Kyle Grant scored his first career goal on his first career shot.

It was a close game from the start, as neither team led by more than two until early in the fourth. Thundercloud had two markers in the first as the Titans led 3-2. UDM had a 4-2 lead in the second as Mahabir scored his first, but Mercyhurst would come back and take a 7-5 advantage at the break.

The Titans stormed back with four unanswered as Thundercloud went back-to-back to tie it at the 11:23 mark before Bishop netted two straight for a 9-7 lead with 2:40 left.

UDM increased its lead to three, 11-8, with 12:01 left in the contest as Skinner beat the goalie and Gleason tickled the twine, but the Lakers countered with a pair and it was an 11-10 affair with 9:29 on the scoreboard. Mahabir scored the next two for the Titans - one with the man down - to make it 13-11 when Mercyhurst tied it up.

Detroit Mercy outshot the Lakers, 47-41, and won the battle of ground balls, 34-22, and were 21-of-29 on faceoffs.

The, red, white and blue will close out the regular season at CSU next Saturday, Apr. 26, with game time set for 6:00 p.m.
