Titan Defense Drowns Top-Seeded Le Moyne To Advance To NEC Championship

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (5/1/2025)  -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team tied its school record with a fifth-straight win by ending the game with five straight goals, and this one will send the team to the NEC Championship as the Titans upset the number one seed Le Moyne, 6-3, on Thursday afternoon.

The three goals allowed is tied for the fewest in school history and the fewest since winning at Manhattan 9-3 in 2016, while the 6-3 win was the lowest scoring postseason game in school history, overtaking the 7-5 win over top-seeded Marist in the 2013 MAAC Championship semifinals.

The fourth-seeded Titans (6-6) will now take on second-seeded Robert Morris - who beat LIU in overtime 12-11 in the other semifinal- on Saturday, with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Senior Ryan Richters made 14 saves and allowed a career-low three goals - the least amount of goals a Titan has ever allowed in the postseason - including shutting out Le Moyne (9-6) for the final 37 minutes.

Freshman Andrew Parker scored two goals, while senior Aidan Bishop had a goal and two assists. Senior Nolan Graalman, Chase Mahabir, and freshman Zach Gleason all found the back of the net, and junior Kyle Grant tallied three caused turnovers and six ground balls.

The Titans took an early 1-0 lead as Gleason split a double team and fired one in from long range at the 9:16 mark, but the Dolphins scored twice in the final 32 seconds for a 2-1 lead.

The deficit was then 3-1 with 7:19 to go in the second, but that was the last time the top-seeded team would net a goal as Parker netted his first late in the first half to make it 3-2.

UDM would knot the score at 3-3 with 4:39 on the clock in the third as Bishop set up Graalman and after a turnover by the Dolphins, senior Harold Skinner located Bishop in front of the net, and his marker put the red, white and blue in front, 4-3, with 2:36 left.

Mahabir tickled the twine early in the fourth for a 5-3 advantage and Parker added the dagger with 8:35 to go for the three-goal lead and the eventual winning score.

The Titans outshot the Dolphins, 35-25, and took the ground ball battle, 25-22. UDM was 21-of-22 on clears and forced 16 of Le Moyne's 19 turnovers.

Freshman Ian Greenwell had two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while sophomore Gavin Moore picked up a career-high three GBs. Freshman Malakhi Berry Stats had a season-high two takeaways, and freshman Canton Lanham was 7-of-12 in faceoffs.

The NEC Championship game will be held at Le Moyne and will begin at Noon at Ted Grant Field.
