After Detroit Mercy (4-13, 2-6 HL) mounted a key second-quarter run to trail by only two points at the half, the third quarter proved to be the difference.
Cleveland State (14-5, 4-4 HL) opened the second quarter on a 13-5 run to move ahead by 10 pts, 29-19, before Anderson converted on back-to-back layups, followed by a layup from Edwards for a 6-0 Titan response. Jackson then hit a free throw and a 3-pointer to cap off a 10-2 run, cutting the deficit to three points, 31-29, at the break.
However, CSU started the third quarter with a 9-3 spurt to take a 40-32 lead at the 4:47 media timeout. The Vikings extended the run to 16-5 before Edwards once again ended the run with a layup. The Vikings went on to outscore the Titans 20-8 overall to lead by 14 points, 51-37, going into the fourth.
UDM's offense got back on track in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 points, but CSU kept pace with 17 points to maintain the lead and split the season-series with the Titans.
Both team defenses came out strong in the first quarter, with the score tied at 6-6 by the first media timeout. CSU moved ahead 16-12 before Edwards connected on a lay-up to beat the buzzer, pulling UDM within two points, 16-14.
