Titans' Fourth Quarter Rally Comes Up Short Against Milwaukee

DETROIT (1-8-26)  Graduate student Aaliyah McQueen scored 12 points in the fourth quarter for a team-high 18 points on 7-for-16 shooting as Detroit Mercy gave a valiant late push but couldn't overcome Milwaukee's hot 3-point shooting as the Titans fell 74-61 to the Panthers on Thursday night in #HLWBB action at Calihan Hall. Graduate student Jasmine Edwards posted her third double-double of the season with 15 points on 6-for-14 shooting and 14 rebounds.

Graduate student Nisea Burrell and senior Myonna Hooper added six points each. Sophomore Maya Anderson and freshman Naïma Diawara also each chipped in with five points.

Trailing 64-39 at the end of the third quarter, Detroit Mercy (4-11, 2-4 HL) opened the fourth on a 17-6 run to pull within 14 points at 70-56 at the 4:42 mark. Despite outscoring Milwaukee (6-11, 2-4 HL) 22-10 overall in the frame, the Titans only scored five points the rest of the way and couldn't pull any closer.

Both teams used a zone defense for the majority of the game. However, the Panthers shot a blistering 12-for-21 (57.1%) from 3-point range and 27-for-52 (51.9%) overall. Conversely, UDM shot 3-for-19 (15.8%) from long range and 22-for-60 (36.7%) for the game, which proved the difference.

Milwaukee opened the game on fire from the field, hitting 7-for-8, including 6-for-7 from long range, to take a 20-4 lead at the 2:43 mark before Burrell connected on a coast-to-coast layup to end the run but still trailed 22-6 at the end of the first.

The Panthers increased their lead to 33-13 to open the second quarter. However, UDM responded with a 10-5 run to close out the frame, outscoring MKE 17-16 overall to trail by 15 points at the break. For the half, Milwaukee shot 10-for-16 (62.5%) from 3-point range and 13-for-26 (50%) overall.

Edwards connected on a layup for her eighth point to stop Milwaukee's 14-5 run by the 5:00 media timeout of the third quarter. However, the Panthers' offense remained hot, outscoring UDM 26-16 to lead 64-39 going into the fourth quarter.

Detroit Mercy welcomes Green Bay in #HLWBB action on Thursday, Jan 8, at 7 p.m.
