Abby Klaft hit a clutch game-winning two-run double in the sixth inning, while junior
Liv Peterson picked the perfect time to hit her first career home run with a two-run shot in the third inning to lead Detroit Mercy to a historic 5-4 win at Michigan State on Wednesday night at Secchia Stadium. The win marked the first time UDM defeated the Spartans and a Big Ten opponent since a 9-5 decision at MSU on May 1, 2008. Freshman
Savannah Schultz was dynamite in the circle, tossing 100 pitches over 4.2 innings of relief with seven strikeouts to pick up the win.
Klaft and Peterson each finished 1-for-3, while freshman
Hannah Schlachter went 1-for-2 with a double, a pair of runs scored, and a walk.
Senior
Trinity Fessler also drew two walks, with junior
Jada Davis and sophomore
Wendy Ketola drawing a walk each.
Recap:
• MSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off a passed ball following a strikeout, allowing the runner to score from third.
• The Titans took a 3-1 lead off Peterson's two-run shot, followed by Ketola scoring off a wild pitch in the top of the second inning.
• The Spartans pulled within a run off a sacrifice fly in the bottom half.
• MSU tied the game at 3-3 in the third off an RBI single.
• Klaft connected on her two-run double, scoring Schlachter and Fessler for a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning.
• The Spartans posted a triple followed by an RBI single to pull within a run at 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Schultz was able to get the last batter to fly out, ending the game, leaving two runners stranded on second and third.
After a 28-game road swing, the Titans return home to resume #HLSB play with a doubleheader against IU Indy on Friday, April 3, at noon.
