NASHPORT, Ohio (8/30/2026) -- Freshman Christian Helzer ended his collegiate debut with an under-par performance and led the Titans as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team wrapped up its fall opener on Sunday at the Virtues Intercollegiate.

UDM finished 11th overall with a 909 (305-301-303) at the par 72, 7,243-yard Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

Helzer carded a 2-under 70 in the final round to share 27th with a 219 (75-74-70), the best 54-hole opener by a rookie since James Hill tallied a 214 at Missouri's Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate in 2018. He started the day with three straight pars before back-to-back birdies and ended the day with three more birdies and seven pars. Overall, he led the team with 11 birdies and knocked in 30 pars in his first tournament.

Senior David Swab posted a 222 (72-76-74) and shared 38th. He concluded the event with a 2-over 74 as he had four birdies and nine pars, leading the team with 32 pars on the weekend.

Senior Mason Sokolowski tied for 55th with a 227 (76-74-77), while junior Harshan Juttu recorded a 228 (81-74-73) to share 57th. Sokolowski tallied nine birdies and 30 pars and tied for eighth on the course's par 3's with an even-par 3.00 average. Juttu registered two birdies and 13 pars for his 1-over 73, lowering his score in all three rounds.

The Titans will be back in action in two weeks when they compete in Marshall's Joe Feaganes Invitational from Sept. 14-15.
