Helzer Ties UDM Rookie Mark In Top-20 Finish At Marshall

Freshman Christian Helzer tied the Titan rookie record at Marshall.
HUNTINGTON, W Va. (9/15/2026) -- University of Detroit Mercy men's golf freshman Christian Helzer put his name in the record book in just his second collegiate start, and the Titans posted one of their best scores in school history as the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational came to an end on Tuesday.

Detroit Mercy finished ninth with an 860 (287-285-288) at the par 71, 6,523-yard Guyan Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia. The 860 team card is now sixth in school history and the best 54-hole score since 2007.

Helzer wrapped up a great tournament with a 3-over 74 to share 17th with a 211 (71-66-74), tied for 11th in the school record book and tying the UDM rookie record with Brent McClung's 211 (69-68-74) at the Ohio Collegiate Classic in 2000.

After tying for third in school history with a 5-under 66 in round two, Helzer registered four birdies and seven pars on the final 18 to earn the top-20 finish. He tied for eighth on the course's par 5's with a -4, 4.56 average and tied for 10th with 12 total birdies.

Playing as an individual, sophomore Peyton Lawley tied for 37th with a career-low 216 (75-68-73) as he knocked in three birdies and 11 pars for a 2-over 73 in the final round. Overall, he had 11 birdies and 30 pars.

Senior Mason Sokolowski finished 41st after posting a 217 (74-72-71), lowering his score for the third straight round with an even 71, tallying two birdies and 14 pars. He tied for 11th with a 3.08 average on the par 3's and tied for first in the field with 40 pars.

Senior David Swab shared 47th with a 218 (74-74-70) after carding the best Titan round of the day with a 1-under 70. He started the final 18 with nine straight pars and ended it with two birdies and six pars after his lone blemish of a bogey. He also tied for third among the competition with 39 pars in the event.

Senior Ethan Oblak shot a 220 (68-73-79) and tied for 61st, while senior Gowtham Nalluri placed 76th with a 223 (75-75-73).
