The team’s lone lefthander… Has built up a solid resume over his junior career… As a part of four state championships in high school, he’s used to winning, and coach Engel hopes Eccleton will share that mentality with his new teammates.
2012-13:
Played in six events in his rookie year… Averaged a 78.7 in 16 rounds of golf, fourth on the team… Saved his best for last with a 231 (77-82) at the Horizon League Championship, which included tying his career-low round with an even-par 72 in the final round… Finished tied for 23rd at that event… Started his college career with a 153 (79-74) tying for 41st at the Dayton Fall Invitational… Shot a 233 (80-72-81) for a share of 78th at the NYX Hoosier Invitational, where he originally set his 18-hole best with a 72 in the second round… Tied for 37th at the Detroit Titans Invitational with a 235 (82-76-77).
Personal:
A four-year letterwinner in golf as well as a three-year letterwinner in hockey at Lumen Christi… He earned a host of accolades as a prep including Division 3 All-State First Team as a sophomore, junior and senior…He was also named the Jackson Citizen Patriot Co-Player of the Year in 2012 and to the Jackson Citizen Patriot Dream Team as a sophomore and junior…He ended his prep career with a 75.3 average as a senior, winning the regionals with a career low of 68 at the Cascades Golf Course… He also won the Bob Urshalitz Invitational and placed fifth at the state tournament…He helped his team to four-straight state titles… In 2012, Lumen Christi was also league and regional champions, breaking the one round course record at the regionals with a 291…They also won league and regionals in 2010 and 2011 as well a district title in 2010…As a sophomore, he had 11 top-10 finishes in 14 tournaments with a 76.7 average…He also was second at the CAAC Open Invitational and the regionals as well as tying for fourth at the state championships…He improved his average to 76.2 as a junior posting nine top-10 efforts…He was the medalist at the league and regionals and once again claimed fourth at the state tournament… In junior action, he won the Jackson City Junior Championship in 2008 and 2009…In 2010 at age 16, he became the youngest player ever to win the Jackson Tournament of Champions breaking former PGA star Dave Hills record at 17 years of age that stood since 1954… He also claimed the Optimist International Junior State Championship in 2010 and 2011 and finished 21st at the 2011 PGA National finals in West Palm Beach, Florida…Prior to his freshman campaign at Detroit, he advanced all the way to the Elite 8 at the 101st Michigan Amateur Golf Tournament…His cousin, Judy Smiley, graduated from UDM and works at the University’s Law School as a Director of Student Services…A business major.
