New UDM coach
Ray McCallum and his staff continued to reach out to the state's basketball community by hosting a free coaches clinic on Saturday at Calihan Hall.
Hundreds of coaches - from the middle school level high school, AAU and college - enjoyed the first of what will be an annual event under coach McCallum's direction.
The clinic ran from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and featured a host of outstanding speakers:
* Detroit Pistons head coach
Michael Curry, who spoke about playing and coaching at the NBA level. Curry spent 11 seasons in the uniform of six different NBA teams and this is his first year as a head coach after having served as a Pistons assistant last winter.
* Wayne State head coach
David Greer, who discussed offensive drills. Greer is in his eighth year at Wayne State, where he has already rolled up 101 career victories, and was the Titans' top assistant for six years prior, helping Detroit to two NCAA Tournament berths.
* Former Saint Louis and UNLV head coach Charlie Spoonhour, who took SLU to four post-season tournaments and Las Vegas to two more, covered defensive drills. Spoonhour remains the third-winningest coach in SLU history, with 122 victories in seven seasons.
* And Coach McCallum and his staff and players provided on-court demonstrations while also finishing the day with a Question and Answer session. McCallum is in his first season at UDM, but this is his 12th year as a college head coach, with previous stops at Ball State and Houston. He took four teams to post-season play during his earlier head coaching stints. McCallum spent the last two seasons at Indiana, where he served as associate head coach in 2007-08.
"This was another opportunity for our staff to meet with coaches from around the state, to have them see our facilities at Calihan Hall and to share ideas about our game," coach McCallum said. "We have tried to get to know as many of the state's basketball coaches as possible since we arrived at UDM. Hopefully they all went home with some new ideas from the speakers and demonstrations that will help them and their teams this season."
Earlier this year, McCallum and his staff held UDM's first-ever team basketball camp and elite player camp. Each, like Saturday's free coaches clinic, was a rousing success.
