Women's Lacrosse Makes Victorious Debut on Campus Against Adrian

The University of Detroit Mercy community and the 241 fans in attendance got a first glimpse of lacrosse on campus as the Detroit Titans women's team, which begins its inaugural season in 2009, faced Adrian in an exhibition contest Saturday afternoon at Titan Field and UDM claimed a 13-11 victory against the Bulldogs.

"It was great for the athletes to get a win and I know that this was a good experience for everyone," said UDM head coach #Mary Ann Meltzer#. "Being a new program, it is nice to be able to compete against another team to give the athletes a taste of what is to come in the future. This win will give my players confidence and I am excited for us to continue to work during practice this week to get prepared for Northwestern."

UDM freshman Emily Boissonneault led the Titans in scoring with four goals and also added an assist on the afternoon.

"I think it was awesome that the first time we played another team that it was on our home field and in front of our fans," stated Boissonneault. "This was the first time we were able to play a full field game and this was great for us because it is a different experience in game and it was nice to see how everyone plays against another squad."

Detroit freshmen Anna Eidem and Corina Mahorn each found the back of the net three times, while Eidem also dished out two assists against the Bulldogs. Freshman Titan #Alyssa Shaver# scored twice, while teammate sophomore Olivia Mendoza tallied once.

"It was extremely exciting for the first-ever lacrosse game on Titan Field to see so many fans in attendance," said UDM director of athletics Keri Gaither. "And, to top it off, it was a great outcome for our team."

Rachel Johnston, Mariana DeGiovanni and Andrea Soloko each netted three goals for Adrian, while Justyne Cannata and Amanda Lambert each scored one goal. Johnston also assisted twice for the Bulldogs.

Shots were even at 31 apiece, while Detroit freshman goalkeeper Brett Yenger tallied 12 saves on the afternoon and Adrian ended with six.

The Titans will return to action when they face Northwestern in an exhibition match-up on Oct. 10 in Evanston, IL, at 7 p.m.
