Four Softball Players Garner National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award

Senior co-captain Jacqueline Nortman (Groves, TX/Msgr. Kelly Catholic), junior pitcher Jill Perry (Ortonville, MI/Brandon), junior outfielder Katelyn McCutcheon (Pleasant Ridge, MI/Ferndale) and sophomore catcher Breana Sesoko (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) received All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2007-08 academic year for excellence in the classroom as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In order to receive the honor, student-athletes must maintain a 3.5 GPA for the entire academic year.

“It is great to recognize the tremendous achievements of these four Titans,” said head softball coach Bob Wilkerson. “It is extremely difficult to perform at these academic levels with the athletic demands of a Division I program. I am very proud of these outstanding student-athletes for their hard work and dedication.”

Nortman, who holds a 3.79 GPA while majoring in pre-med, led the team in hitting during league play with a .370 average from the lead-off spot and was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team. She also led the Titans in stolen bases going a perfect 9-for-9 on the season and tied for second with 13 runs scored.

Last season, Perry started 10 games with 16 appearances on the mound for the Titans posting a 4-7 record with 40 strikeouts. She has a 3.82 GPA as biology major.

McCutcheon currently holds a perfect 4.00 GPA as an engineering major. Last season, she appeared in 13 games with nine at-bats while recording a .833 fielding percentage.

Sesoko, who holds a 3.86 GPA as a pre-law major, was named to All-Horizon League Newcomer Team. She joined some elite company as the Titans' first member of the All-Newcomer Team since Sarah Dickey in 2004, and became the seventh player to be placed on the All-Newcomer team under coach Wilkerson, joining former UDM greats such as Katrina Klemp, Lindsay Roy and current assistant coach Dayna (Rodrigues) Peterson. For the season, Sesoko finished third on the team with a .313 batting average while tying for the team lead with nine doubles and ranking second with 13 runs scored.

The UDM softball team opens the 2009 season at the Texas A&M Corpus Tournament held in Corpus Christi, TX., Feb. 13-15.
