Box Score
Junior
Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) tied his season high with 18 points, including 13 straight during a Titan second half run, and senior
Tryl Hartfield (Wyoming, MI/Rogers) added a career best 14 points as UDM ended its 19 game road losing streak with a 67-55 victory over Central Michigan on Tuesday night.
Detroit (4-7) led by two, 35-33, early in the second half when the Titans went on a 19-6 run to break the game wide open. Senior
Michael Harrington (Country Club Hills, IL/Rich Central) started the offensive spurt with a free throw followed by a 3-pointer by junior
Nemanja Jokic (Sombor, Serbia/Mechanical). Both teams then traded a pair of free throws, but Detroit pushed its lead to seven, 43-36, at the 11:27 mark when senior
Chris Hayes (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) took a pass from Kennedy and slammed it in.
Kennedy then made sure Central Michigan (3-8) never had a chance of coming back scoring 13 straight points for the Titans over the next four minutes as Detroit held its largest lead during that span, 54-39 with seven minutes left to play
The Chippewas were able to hold the Titans scoreless for the next three minutes, but down the stretch, UDM hit 11 of 14 free throws, including a perfect 6-for-6 effort from Hartfield and a 3-of-4 tally from freshman
Jordan Fee (Grove City, PA/Grove City), to secure the win.
Besides his 18 markers, Kennedy also added four rebounds and two blocks, while Harrington finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
UDM outrebounded CMU, 34-24, as well as held the Chippewas to just 36 percent shooting, while causing 16 turnovers. The red, white and blue also connected on a season high 29 free throws in 33 attempts.
Detroit raced out in front scoring the games first six points, before CMU came back to tie the game on four different occasions. Central even took the lead, 21-19, with 6:41 to go in the first period, but the Titans ended the half on a 13-6 run to take a lead that they would never relinquish.
The Titans return to action on Jan. 1, New Year's Day, as Detroit gets back into Horizon League Play when Youngstown State comes to the Motor City. With the game set to start at 1:05 p.m., it will officially be the first Division I men's college basketball game in 2009.
