Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational Open Results in pdf
The 22nd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational proved to be one of the best races in event history as a new course record was set on the women's side. The event, which also included two open 5k races as well as a "Kids Against Tommy Titan Race" was held in Cass-Benton Park in Northville.
The Detroit Titans women's cross country team came away with a seventh-place finish at the end of the day with a 207 team score. The Titans were led by sophomore Kristie Ferrans who finished 41st with a time of 19:42. Senior Jennifer DeFauw was 61st in 20:23, while sophomore Kayleigh Toombs and freshman Stephanie Rossman placed 65th and 66th with a 20:36 and 20:37, respectively.
"We had a good day against one of the more competitive fields at our meet," said head coach Guy Murray. "Kristie is off to a tremendous start. With all the hard work she put it over the past year, its great for her to get back to her best."
The Titans' Terricita Thomas and Kirstin Mooney also finished among the top 80 as the senior Thomas was 75th in 21:02, while the first-year runner Mooney was just behind her placing 79th in 21:10. Rounding out the race for UDM were seniors Chanteneel McClendon (108th - 23:02) and Chrissy Bieling (109th - 23:08).
Michigan's Nicole Edwards won the race with a course and meet record time of 17:19. The Wolverines, who had seven runners in the top 20 and four in the top nine, went on to claim the team championship with an overall score of 27. Bucknell, who had eight runners among the top 20, came in second with 47 points, while Findlay was third with 99 points. The Oilers' Hilary Esselstein also finished third individually with a time of 17:40.
Two-time defending champion Rachelle Malette help lead Wayne State (127) to a fourth-place tally as she finished second in 17:35. The run was not only her best time in event history, but also the fourth best performance ever. Coming in fifth was Oakland with a 129 team tally.
The Titans return to action in two weeks as Detroit heads to South Bend, IN, for the annual National Catholics Championship. The race will take place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Notre Dame Golf Course.
