Sophomore sprinter Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas / Coakley) captured two individual events and was part of a first place relay effort as the Titans downed Valparaiso 70-41 at the Mike Lints Alumni Open in Grand Valley. While the Titans and Crusaders ran with other squads in the open meet, a dual score was recorded between the two.

“We had a fantastic meet,” said head coach Guy Murray. “Our top guys are off to a great start running their best this early and the whole team is competing well along with them.”

Hanna took first in the 200-meters, setting a personal and UDM indoor record with a time of 22.04, a mark that now stands fifth in school history. He went on to claim first in the 400m clocked at 48.43, the third best run in Titan annals.

“Lesley is off to a great start and will be a threat to win every time on the track.” added Murray.

The second year runner also teamed with seniors Eric Christy (St. Clair, MI / St. Clair) and John LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI / De LaSalle Collegiate) and freshman Joe LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI / De LaSalle Collegiate) to place first in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:19.23.

Sophomore Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI / Ferndale ) became just the second Titan to break seven in the 60m finishing second in the event in 6.97.

“Earnest broke seven very early in the year and is going to be in contention all year.” Murray said.

Freshman Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON / Sandwich Secondary) also took part in the 60m, taking 16th in the finals in 7.24, after running a 7.16 in the preliminaries for the sixth best time in the UDM record book.

The 600m saw Christy earn a new personal record with a time of 1:22.94, the ninth best run in school history, as well as his senior teammate LaRocca taking sixth with a career best time of 1:23.32.

Three Titans placed in the top 10 in the mile led by sophomores Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI / Petoskey) and Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON / Denis Morris Catholic), who finished second and third respectively, in 4:23.17 and 4:23.68.

Liederbach also earned a career mark in the 3000m crossing the finish line in 8:41.02, the fourth best time ever by a Titan distance runner.. Sophomores Ryan Ayala (Coopersville, MI / Coopersville) and Kevin Smalley (Gladwin, MI / Gladwin) also took part in the race setting new career marks as Ayala took 10th in 9:09.10, while Smalley was 13th in 9:21.07.

“Pat continues to run at a high level,” lauded Murray. “The mile was slower than expected, but he made up for it with a great 3k.”

Junior Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI / Comstock Park) almost came away with a victory in the 800m, finishing second with a new indoor PR of 1:58.61. Freshman Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI / Yale) had a strong showing in a pair of events placing seventh in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.70 and 21st in the long jump with a leap of 5.95m/19'6.25".
