Outstanding Titans Gashaj, Yip Earn #HLTF Outdoor Sportsmanship Award Winners

Junior Gabriela Gashaj and senior Anthony Yip were named the #HLTF Outdoor Sportsmanship Award winners

INDIANAPOLIS (5/28/2026) -- University of Detroit Mercy track and field senior Anthony Yip and junior Gabriela Gashaj were recognized for their great attitude in competition as both student-athletes were named the Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Sportsmanship Award winners.

The Sportsmanship Award recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Sportsmanship is defined as behavior exhibited during competition by student-athletes based on values, respect, and integrity.

Gashaj has shown her positive personality ever since she arrived on campus. She works hard every day and is always seen encouraging and congratulating her teammates and opponents. In the outdoor campaign, she hit the podium and expressed her appreciation for the coaches, teammates, and opponents.

Yip has always been a great spirit at every meet, watching and cheering for his teammates and others. This year, due to a University hiring freeze, the unit was without a dedicated coach, and he essentially became the coach, organizing practices and helping see the throwers score points at the Horizon League Championships. He earned UDM's Larry Bleach Award for his mindset and work ethic in training.

The pair adds to the great tradition the Titans have displayed in competition as sportsmanship award winners, joining Joshua Neary (2026 Indoor Track), Claire Hunt (2025 Cross Country), Drew Pierson (2025 Men's Soccer), Nina Pizzo (2025 Indoor Track), Allison Sherman (2023 Cross Country & 2024 Indoor Track), and Oscar Hernandez (2024 Indoor Track).
