Full Results

It was a fast day on the track for the Titans' men's track and field program as Detroit set two school records and won four events to take second with 73 points on Saturday at the 26th Annual Don Wright Team Challenge, held at the University of Western Ontario.

Sophomore Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas/Coakley) had a big hand in the record breaking performances as the sprinter won the 300m in a school and meet record time of 34.41. He then teamed with juniors Sam Jones (Detroit, MI/U-D Jesuit) and Deonte Osayande (Detroit, MI/Winans Academy) and sophomore Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI/Ferndale) to win the 4x200m in 1:31.26, also a new school top mark.

“Lesley's 300m was just a fantastic time,” said head coach Guy Murray. “It is a great honor to have a meet record at a traditional meet that has had a number of great performances over the years.”

Hanna also took part in the Titan 4x400m, along with seniors Eric Christy (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) and John LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI/De LaSalle Collegiate) and freshman Joe LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI / De LaSalle Collegiate), that earned second totaling 3:24.58.

Freshman Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI/Yale) was also one of the victorious Titans taking first in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.56, a new personal record as well as the eight best run in school history. Campbell then came back to earn third in the long jump with a season best leap of 6.09m/19'11.75”.

“A very nice win for Aviram,” said Murray. “He has been a pleasant surprise, as we had high hopes for him, but you never know with rookies.”

Sophomore Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI / Petoskey) was the other event winner on the day, placing first in the 1500m in 3:58.60, a run that now stands third on the all-time indoor school records list.

“Pat just continues to run fast and race tactically smart,” added Murray.

Senior Adam Mayhew (Richland, MI/Gull Lake) came away with a pair of top three finishes with a runner-up effort in the weight throw with a 15.76m/51'8.5” toss, the sixth best throw in UDM annals, while placing third in the shot put with a 14.20m/46'7.25” mark.

Christy was second in the 600m in 1:23.81, while Cleary took third in the 60m at 7.03.

Sophomore Alex Harris (Huntington Woods, MI/Shrine) finished sixth in the 3000m timed at 8:56.46, while classmate Ryan Ayala (Coopersville, MI/Coopersville) was 11th in the same race with a career best run of 9:04.97.

In the 4x800m, juniors Kevin Wozniak (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) and Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) and sophomores Brian Greenhoe (Sand Lake, MI/Grant) and Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON/Denis Morris Catholic), were third in 8:01.86, a run that is now the seventh best indoor time in school history.

“We are doing a great job of competing right now,” said Murray. “We avoided a let down from last week and had some great performances today.”

Next up on the docket for the men is a quad-meet with Eastern and Central Michigan and Oakland next Friday, Jan. 30, in Ypsilanti.
